Roman Castle — Restaurant in Mauston

A week ago, my friend & I dined at Roman Castle for the first time, during lunch time. Jenny was our server and she told us their specials and served us with water. They have an extensive menu with reasonable prices. My friend questioned whether the spaghetti sauce was marinara or meat sauce because she doesn't like it sweet, like some marinara's are. Jenny went into the kitchen and brought out a 2oz sauce sample. We both thought it was delicious & were extremely impressed they would do that. So, my friend ordered the spaghetti and couldn't decide between meat sauce or meatball (another option was marinara), so she got both, and loved it. I ordered the well reviewed Italian beef & cheese sandwich with au jus, and wasn't disappointed. Lots of ooey gooey cheese atop thinly sliced beef (not deli sliced meat), it was a very authentic Italian Sandwich (not the open face beef sandwich A.I. is linking me to/I should've taken a pucture). In addition to the homemade bun of my sandwich, we were each served a large, homemade, warm, artisan roll, on a cutting board with our meals. We overheard some diners decline theirs, which tells us their food is great with or without their awesome rolls. But, we loved them!! The food portions were filling, especially with the additional signature roll. Jenny was very pleasant & enjoyable, as were other waitresses and lady at the counter when we paid our bill. The outside of the restaurant was beautifully decorated with fresh, hanging flower baskets and cafe style tables/chairs, just as we might find in Rome. Next time, if it's not raining, I'll enjoy an authentic Italian coffee & dessert on the patio. Inside the restaurant, it was decorated in a modest Italian theme. The floorplan is a little outdated, but very spacious between guests. They have both tables and booths, and the color scheme was fresh & vibrant. This was my first visit to the Mauston area, and Roman Castle provided excellent representation of the friendly people here. I'm excited to return, and even though they offer many delicious options, I'll likely reorder the Italian beef Sandwich (it was THAT good)! P.S. WOW! Just WOW!! Just ordered delivery for the 1st time & am I impressed! Ellen took my order on the phone, and is she great? You bet. I was really hungry but had trouble getting the online menu to work for me. So she proceedes to tell me about the special they had for today which was a roast pork dinner. Comes with REAL mashed potatoes & gravy, stuffing, green beans & a dinner roll (HUGE!). Oh, did I mention you can choose a dinner salad or HOMEMADE chicken noodle or minestrone soup? Yeah. Comes with that too! All for a REALLY reasonable price! (Applesauce too) SOOOO GOOD! I also wanted something to have tomorrow & one of the things Ellen mentioned was the gyro. If you've ever gotten to have the real thing on a "spindle" ( my word since I can't think of the right one), you'll never want the frozen packaged stuff that most places use. This. Was. DELICIOUS!! came with tzaziki sauce, pickles & a pepper & a serving of coleslaw. I think she said fries were a choice, but homemade coleslaw?? Yeaaaah. That! The homemade roll was huge, warm & TO. DIE. FOR! All in all... I would be completely happy to eat at Roman Castle on an obsessive rotation if I lived close by, but, since Ellen sent a menu with my delivery order, I can order any time I come thru. They have lots to choose from, its really good from what I've tried so far & they're super nice people to give your business to. The last time I had food this good... it was at home & I cooked it! Definitely give them a try... its not a chain restaurant that thaws stuff from the freezer, heats & serves it. This kind of place is like a blast from the past. You know... back when restaurants really took pride in their food and service not like so many today that just "take" advantage of your wallet. This is the worst restaurant in Mauston. We had to request the senior menu twice before getting it and then had to ask for time to decide. The place wasn’t even busy. The server then turned her attention to another table and it was a bit before she took our order. My SO got lasagna and I got chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes and country (white) gravy. Our salads were watery but okay. The lemonade was really good, as was the bread. We ended up waiting a long time, over a half hour, for our food and that’s when the server finally told us lasagna took longer to cook. Eventually the food came in another ten minutes or so. Mine was completely wrong—fried chicken and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. She asked if I wanted it when I said it wasn’t what I ordered. I said no. She took it back and I figured it would just be a few minutes and told my SO to eat. When 15 minutes passed I told the server I wasn’t hungry anymore and to cancel the order and take it off the bill. She said it was almost ready and went back to the front. She then came back and said the manager wouldn’t take it off the bill but would give me 20% off. I still had no food and asked for the manager. She came to the table and said the food was ready and I said for the third time that I didn’t want it at this point. The manager then got nasty and accused me of wanting free food! What food? I hadn’t gotten it! It had been over an hour since we walked in the door! She said people make mistakes but I’d been waiting a long time. She tried to tell me I hadn’t been waiting that long but my SO was halfway through his lasagna that was luke warm in the middle when it came to the table! She was loud and rude and accusatory and walked away while I was talking. The server brought the food out with a box and I scraped it in there. End result was we got a few dollars off the bill.
