Truly horrendous experience yesterday. We went in around 6pm and the place was a ghost town - always a bad sign. There were tons of to-go orders being packed but no one dining in even at dinnertime. It's a very small dining room so it was very obvious.
We ordered right away as we'd already read the menu beforehand. My mom ordered the chicken tikka and was confused when she was asked the spice level; chicken tikka is generally cooked in a clay pot and takes a long time to make, so it's usually pre-made and kept warm throughout the day: not something you can spice on prepping as the spices are added before cooking. I ordered mild dal makhani.
The waitress inputted the order on her handheld device and then disappeared. We waited a while for our samosas but didn't mind as we were just chatting amongst ourselves. Once they arrived, we took our time eating them, but soon we were done and left with empty plates, waiting for our main course. We waited ... and waited ... and waited.
Soon another waitress came and asked if we wanted anything else. Um ... yes?! Our main dishes?! I think they must have not actually been inputted. She leaves and we're ignored for a while, waiting again. My mom's chicken tikka comes out and it's so spicy that she finishes her glass of water and mine. Think Indian hot wings, just basted in hot spices, rather than having them cooked in.
The waitress is still ignoring us so I have to ask her to come by and refill our waters. After this point, she says all of two or three words to us for the rest of our meal. I believe she was mad that she got called out for messing up and was taking it out on us. I overheard another gentleman asking for his to-go order and her telling him that it had never been sent to the kitchen, meaning they had to take another customer's waiting order and give it to him before making up a new batch for the other customer. Terrible management.
We are still waiting on my dal makhani, which comes a good ten or fifteen minutes after my mom's dish. We have to repeatedly ask if it's going to come soon; my mom had already put her chicken tikka aside as not only was it incredibly spicy, it was also all tough and chewy, not the juicy and tender meat that chicken tikka should be.
We had already paid for the check and my mom had picked through all the salvageable meat in her dish by the time my dal makhani comes out. I don't feel like sitting and eating by myself with my mom still there, so I ask for a to-go container and ask her to just put the rice and makhani in one container. She brings out one tiny to-go container that won't hold all the food, and when we ask her for another one so we can divide it amongst the two, she ignores us. I end up having to leave half of my makhani because we can't fit everything in the container.
When I finally eat it, it's so spicy I can barely eat it and I find two whole peppers mixed in. Certainly not the mild dish I asked for; again, I believe she took out her frustration on us and gave us spicy dishes on purpose. The food was practically inedible from the spice. I eat Indian regularly, even making my own aloo gobi and chana masala at home, so it's not as if this is my first time eating dal makhani. I've never had a restaurant give me food so spicy I couldn't eat it when I requested mild.
And again, the service was awful. I shouldn't have to call out to the server for a water refill when we are the only patrons in the store, nor should I be ignored when I ask for another to-go container. Ridiculously unprofessional and downright rude.
If you want ACTUALLY good Indian with ACTUALLY good service, please go to Cafe Tandoor. I regret wanting to try a new Indian restaurant instead of just going to the place we know treats us kindly and serves...
Read moreWe live in Toronto Canada, happened to try this restaurant while we where traveling to Cleveland, I am from South India (TN) and lived in Bangalore for 12 years and I consider myself as a foodie.
I love hyderabadi cuisine not only for the wonderful Biryani but also for all other dishes the cuisine has to offer.
We got seated immediately and took the special buffet lunch, for 15.99 + tax the buffet had a really good spread of veg and non veg options.
Veg : Cauliflower chilly, veg Manchurian, dhal, tindi fry, curd rice, papad, pickle, more kolambu (majige pulusu), white rice, veg Biryani.
Non veg: mutton Biryani, chicken Biryani, mutton Rogan Josh, Chicken curry, shrimp curry, tandoori chicken, fish fry,
Desert; mango mouse, double ka metha, guloab Jamon, masala chai.
When it comes to buffet It's not about the number of varsities available in the spread it's about the taste. I have been to buffet which had more than 60 variety which costs 25$ but very few items made the cut, have also been to buffet which had just 10 items and everything is lip smacking good. I prefer the second one which satisfies the foodie inside me.
This buffet was neither large nor small and every single dish was not just awesome but lip smacking awesome.
Also usually in buffet they tend to put all their boney pieces of meat not here. Biryanis , curries had really nice prices of meat.
Indian restaurants in North America tend to heavily modify the taste and flavor to the locals and usually every curry chicken/lamb/shrimp taste the same, but here I felt that even though it was toned down a bit it was done in a good way, still I can taste the spicyness and the core flavors of Hyderabadi cuisine.
My only down side was tandoori which could have been more flavorful, it was juicy but lacked the flavor.
This was one of the best Indian buffet I had so far in North America. Locals if you want to know what real India food taste like try this one.
PS: Majige pulusu was out...
Read moreService is Terrible!! I called at 8:45pm to order the Malai Kabab and was told that the kitchen doesn’t make the dish after 9pm? What!? I then asked about 3, THREE other dishes and the girl taking the order became very confused. I was eventually transferred to someone else. Finally I was able to order Vindaloo chicken. The WORST part of the order process was asking for Biryani Rice - you would think a place that has Biriyani in the name, it would be easy?? No!! I was asked several times how spicy that I would like the rice. First, that seemed like an odd question. I was extremely CLEAR, I would like ONE rice to be spicy (since they are asking) and the SECOND to have NO spice. I was also asked multiple times about plain rice. I was very CLEAR that I wanted to substitute Biryani rice. Finally, I arrive to pick up the order and as I am patiently waiting the staff decide to help the person BEHIND me first, then ask me my name, state that MY order is ready BUT continue to ignore the fact that I’m standing there and keep helping the person behind. After another 5 minutes I finally get helped. I ask about the rice and the girl at the desk tells me that we have plain rice. Ok, fine…. Mistakenly I didn’t check the order; turns out we have two very SPICY containers of Biryani rice - I was very CLEAR that one of them needed to NOT be spicy. Additionally, the food for my wife came SPICY and I clearly specified MILD when ordering. We have been frequent customers PRE-Covid - however, we feel like we NEVER want to return after...
