Where to begin. Its almost a crime to live and have a business blocks away from a restaurant( and never dine in it) that has been in business over 40 years. After some chatter and clamor for their breakfast and buiscuits...i decided to pull the trigger on having brunch here. Rex cafe is as old as downtown mcallen with many a memories to behold..many customers swear by the good eateries here...and swap war stories over a cup of fresh coffee....almost daily.... I parked right outside Sunday 2:45 pm(closed at 4pm) so i knew i had avoided rush hour and had plenty time to enjoy a hot meal. I sat myself and in no time was attended by a lady that took our order... I asked for the favorite dishes of Rex but she didn't know what to answer...so no biggie.. I ordered breakfast plate and coffee. Coffee i had to swap to foam cup because of the detergent taste cup had on it...no biggie. I ordered a biscuit but they were out...so they brought me a "bolillo" bread toasted in butter. It was delicious. Food was out and portions were proper for the low price it came with. Meal was bland tasting but good enough for price. Lady never came back to offer coffee refills..and when i asked about a foam cup to swap my coffee into..she had a face like 4pm couldn't come fast enough. Thats a biggie...for me... The other great fuzz Rex is known for is its bakery..i told the ball n chain i was gonna get some bread to take home from there...but quickly retreated when i saw a fly enjoying the days baked goods. Fly was sitting on a choclate "concha" (my favorite). When i was leaving I glanced at the sweet bread again and the fly was sitting on a different "concha"...that fly sure loves conchas. I paid with my debit card and cashier gave me receipt and said thanks...i asked where i could input "tip" and he said that wasn't part of their business integration systems. Well...that explains the poor service we received from the lady....how can they perform at better levels with no tips to be included? That was a bad call on behalf of Rex restaurant owners. So i can hardly muster a 3.5 rating on this iconic eatery... If u want to chat with old folks about wars...all staf server's names that come n gone over the years ...and if ur lucky..fresh buisquits that haven't been fondled by flies...this is your place...too bad i won't ever be coming back... Maria's restaurant just 1 block east of this place with 40 years service easily serves much much better tasting food..which i highly recommend! Mike

This place is an old restaurant, with good prices but the inside of the place could use some work. The prices are very affordable I ordered the huevos rancheros and for $5.75 you get 2 eggs, refried beans, potatoes and bacon. The eggs were cooked perfectly over medium, the salsa for the eggs was tasty, the potatoes were crispy made fresh to order, the beans were a bit simple pork lard would help, the bacon was thick and crispy it was really good. Both corn and flour tortillas are not made here, they are store bought, but the flour tortillas are bought raw so it gives them a better taste. The coffee is actually really good and very hot but it costs $3.50. Overall i think this place is crowded due to the Nostalgic effect, but in general the food is good, just the restaurant and restroom need some rework.

The waitress didn’t speak much English and I didn’t speak much Spanish, but we figured it out. Special today was fideo. This restaurant makes the chicken on the bone with the soup and it makes a world of difference in the flavor. Truly amazing. The beans that are served on the side are top tier. I would have been happy with a bowl of these beans and some tortillas. I wanted to try a fajita taco on the side, but they would only sell them as a plate of 3, so that’s a missed opportunity there. Overall I would definitely return. Another positive is that they stay open later than the other places downtown. They also do not ask for a tip? Not sure if I should have left some cash on the table, since I paid with card.
