I stopped by on a weekday night. I had a craving for a treat after a long workday.

Upon arriving, I was welcomed by the brightly lit and inviting entrance that was a beacon in this otherwise quiet shopping center.

I was lucky that when I arrived at the counter, there was no one else in line. The server was very friendly and invited me to taste before ordering. She explained the options after determining it was my first visit.

I opted for two flavors in a bowl--cheesecake and banana. She even asked the order I wanted them staked (nice touch). She had my order ready within no time. I was excited to try.

On the very first bite, it was evident that this was unlike other ice cream offerings in the Valley. It was smooth, creamy and delightful. The cheesecake was tasty. The banana? Absolutely dreamy! It was like eating the best tasting, perfectly ripe banana in the form of ice cream!

I travel all over the country for work and I have had my fair share of ice cream (one would argue too much); whether it be from mom & pop shops or famous regional institutions (Graeter’s and Stewart’s, I’m looking at you.) and none of them can hold a candle to Golden Ice Cream in McAllen, TX.

I came to this shop purely out of happenstance since I was in the area for work and I was blown away. I ordered a waffle cone with Java Cookie and Cookie Crumble (cookies and crème) and the flavor and texture was spectacular. By way of some sort of frozen dairy alchemy, they have managed to to make this ice cream undeniably rich, yet not overly sweet. Even the cone had hints of vanilla and everything was incredibly fresh.

The service also gets top marks- friendly, fast, and seemed to truly enjoy working there.
