I live a few miles away and went in and put in an order for take out. The staff was very friendly. My order was prepared very quickly. I put down 4 for the Atmosphere because it's inside a bowling alley, and ambient background noise isn't great for a dining area. Not much they could do to fix it, still a factor.
I tried all foods without adding anything at first (including their supplied BBQ sauce) to try to give a good review on the food on it's own merit.
Food wise, I ordered the mac and cheese, hush puppies, the zesty dill chicken sandwich, and the fat man platter (which was a little of everything, and almost 2 pounds of food in that last item for $27. Not bad for most non-chain BBQ places).
The jalepeno and cheddar sausage was excellent. Comparing it to my favorite BBQ place (which is sadly over an hour away), Pig Pin's sausage is better, hands down. This will likely be on my repeat order list. Great flavor, good texture.
The chicken sandwich was also very good. White cheddar, a large piece of breaded chicken, and a small scoop of cole slaw on top. The breading stayed crispy on the short ride home. Had a subtle sweet flavor to it. Chicken was juicy. I did not pick up the zesty dill. Still a great sandwich. It was $10 though, so in weighing the value of it against 'fast food' chicken sandwiches (though we do not have a Popeye's nearby) is something to consider.
The pulled pork, it was on par with the other BBQ places in Mebane. I think as a value proposition, the pulled pork is more about who makes your favorite BBQ sauce. I'm not a fan of vinegar BBQ sauce in general, however this one was okay - which means it's probably pretty good to someone who likes vinegar based sauces.
The Brisket was tender, sliced thin, had a tiny trace of fat on it. Did I wish it had more 'bark'? Yes. Do I wish it had a little more fat? Yes. Do I hope this place offers 'Burnt ends' or full on 'beef ribs' as a regular special (certain days of the week), absolutely. I would love to try their hand at those two things. I will likely try the brisket again in a larger portion.
The mac and cheese was creamy and cheesy. Subtle flavor, I think they used white cheddar? After a few bites I sprinkled on a little salt and pepper, really woke it up. Better than most of the other chain BBQ places around here.
The smoked turkey was tender and juicy. Mild flavor, to be expected, it's turkey! A good option for people that have diet restrictions.
The hushpuppies are... hushpuppies. Crispy, tasty, though not outstanding from other local offerings. Then again, doing something unique with these would be tough, so a "standard hushpuppy" is still...
Read moreWe've been wanting to try FMaHF since moving to Mebane in 2021. Finally had the chance when we hit the Pig Pin before an evening in the arcade at Buffaloe Lanes, which is now heavily branded with Pig Pin graphics.
The food was ok. I had a "loaded" baked potato with brisket. My daughter had a regular "loaded" baked potato, and my mother had the brisket melt. We also got a side of the gouda and some crinkle fries.
Despite being called "loaded" baked potatoes, they don't come with a lot of toppings. The potatoes are really big, which was nice, but relatively dry. The brisket was disappointing. Pretty dry and lacking flavor. The squeeze container of sour cream that comes on the side came in handy.
My mother enjoyed the brisket melt, but it definitely needs to come with a fork and knife, because it's so juicy that it's hard to pick up! 😂
The gouda mac is an interesting side. It's VERY rich. It's going to be something you either really like or ask someone else at the table to finish for you.
It was nice to finally get a chance to try FMaHF. I like that they're injecting some life into the popular bowling alley, as they're a dying breed in modern society. Despite the food not going over like we expected, they're obviously doing things right, because there was a massive line forming when we...
Read moreI have traveled the United States north to south and east to west in search of excellent BBQ! I have been wanting to try fat man & his food for some time. Well the opportunity came today when my work had catering from them. I love to do food reviews . So here goes! Rating scale 0 - 10 Brisket 2 Pork 3 Green beans 1 Mac and cheese 4
I will explain my reasoning for each food.
Brisket had no traditional flavor @ all. I am always looking for that wonderful salt / pepper bark. I got a bitter taste I would say possible wet wood or over smoking. The Brisket was moist. No smoke ring @ all but I always overlook a smoke ring .
Pork had flavor to it . Bad thing was I got that same bitter taste as the Brisket had.
Green beans taste like they came straight out of a can. Some form of seasoning would have helped.
Mac and cheese I would say average nothing that would make me think wow they put lots of love in this.
I have yet to find really good Brisket or pork in...
