My new favorite restaurant in Mechanicsville.
I've lived in Mechanicsville my whole life. So I've been to nearly every restaurant and fast food place in the area. Peking is one of those older gems that you wish more people appreciated and took notice of.
Pro's: FREE TEA! Really, need I say more? Just kidding. While the tea is a wonderful bonus that we always appreciate, the food is absolutely amazing. I've never NOT had great food or service at this restaurant. No matter what I get, the portions are always huge and I always have leftovers. Always. My two favorite dishes are the Crispy Duck and Happy Family, though the wing and rib appetizers are also really good. My only complaint would be that I wish the dishes had more sauce (I've asked, they usually bring out a side of uncooked sauce that doesn't taste the same).
Service: The staff is always very friendly and polite. I've never had any complaints over any staff member before.
Cons: As much as I hate to list a con, there is one that really needs to be brought up. Decor. This establishment has been around for a long, long time... and it looks it. The decor really needs to be updated, or if anything, they need to fix everything that's obviously broken. The booths and curtains are torn. The tables are cracked. The wallpaper is peeling. And the ceiling tiles are disgusting. Please, please update your decor so this restaurant can shine as much as it deserves.
Edit: The restaurant has since removed all of the booths and replaced them with chairs and has cleaned the ceiling. It's a big...
Read moreThis was our first time getting a meal at Peking. It was a great disappointment: we had two orders of chicken fried rice, and an order of general tso's chicken with fried rice. We made a point of telling them we needed soy sauce for the rice. Half of one container of fried rice was eaten with some soy sauce. The next day we went to heat the two remaining chicken fried rices and discovered they had not bothered to include any soy sauce so it was necessary to discard them because we had no soy sauce even though they had been asked to include it. The bag was full of some pink thing called duck sauce which has no place on fried rice or general tso's chicken. General tso's chicken is supposed to be very fiery hot and spicy. The general tso's chicken with so mild it could have been fed to a baby still sitting in a high chair I had to put over a tablespoon of chili crisp into it just to bring the heat up to an acceptable level once we got it home. And again it was a huge disappointment because they didn't bother to include soy sauce as they were asked to. I cannot recommend Peking and I will never return there for this was literally the worst Oriental meal I've had in the Richmond area in...
Read moreIm not inclined to give another chance for a $70 meal. EVERY dish at that table had problems. If it was just one entree that was bad, i wouldnt have an issue. There was not one thing about the visit that was pleasurable. My daughter has been several times, though this was my first visit. She stated previously that it didnt compare to Jade. I had no idea how bad of an experience it could be. They could offer a free meal, and i would turn it down. The sweet an sour chicken was saturated with aging oil and its flavor didnt even resemble chicken. The sauce was so heavily colored that it stained my daughters lips red. The chicken used for the General Tso was best described as scraps. I almost gagged at the amount of non meat substances in the chicken. Fat, gristle, tendon? Not much makes me gag. That did. The sodas we had were brown carbonated water. We couldnt tell the difference between the three types of soda we ordered. And all of the vegetables were barely even steamed. More like rinsed in hot water. And, the bugs we witnessed crawling up and down the kitchen walls speaks for itself. We were about to place bets on...
