Some say it's because of my ethnicity, some say it's my superb taste, and yet others claim my upbringing wound me too tightly. That's why I have a soft spot in my heart for Arab food. For years and years here in Brevard County, there was a barren landscape when it came to Arab cuisine. But then, within the space of a year, The Lebanese Gourmet (Skewers) opened in Indialantic and Gyros & More opened at the mall. I should pause a moment and clarify for the misinformed that Gyros, tabbouleh, and baklava are NOT Greek in origin (though some may argue they perfected them). They actually have their beginnings in the Ottoman Empire. Like the food in the Ottoman Empire, the name might be Gyros and people might think Greek, but the majority of the items here at Gyros & More are distinctly Arabic.
Instead of visiting the mall location, I decided to drive over to their second location on Hibiscus. As I stepped up to the counter, I was greeted by an extremely gregarious individual by the name of Ken. Ken has an awesome personality and is exceedingly helpful. I asked Ken for an order of the Kafta Skewers, Lamb Shish Kabob, a Gyro, and finally a Kibbi platter with Hummus and Baba ghanouj.
The Kafta skewers were a delicately balanced mix of lean ground beef, parsley, onion, coriander, and other regional spices. The cook char-broiled them to perfection, and the accompanying Tzatziki sauce was so flavorful that I had to stop my taste buds from breaking into an Ardah. The Lamb Shish Kabob was equally delicious and sublimely prepared. In fact, all of the Arab dishes were immensely flavorful.
However, this brings me to the reason this was not a 4 or even a 5-star rating, and that is the Gyro. I have no complaints about the meat or the pita; both were scrumptious. It was the sludgy, mealy tomatoes and flaccid tzatziki sauce that dragged this Middle Eastern staple down, as well as the overall restaurant rating.
The Big Boy Says, “If you want fast, delicious Arabic food, this is the place. If you are looking for a good Gyro, this is not the place you are...
Read moreWhen it comes to Greek food, the Palm Bay/Melbourne area is lacking in options. I work a little over a mile away and wanted to give it a try since gyros are my thing. I was pleased to see reasonable prices on their website and thought that now would be as good a time as any to try it.
When I got there to order, I couldn't help but notice that the prices did that match the website. I wasnt put off but I can see other people fussing over that, so the owners may want to keep their menu boards consistent. My issue with the prices are that the portions dont exactly keep up.
I ordered the classic gyro with fries and a drink. They seem to skimp out on everything which is a pity because the gyro itself is enough to stand out as an above average bite. The meat is juicy and the tzatziki sauce compliments the favor profile of the spices on the meat. Nothing about it was dry, unlike what some of the 1 star reviews say (even though they are referring to the chicken).
The fries are a bit of a problem though. For being fried, they lack a strong crunch. Past that weak crunch is pure softness, which should be how fries step up in their texture. But when your exterior is lacking, it is hard to tell the difference of where the interior softness was supposed to begin.
Now I've attached two pictures of the food. One of the fries and one of the gyro. I was in my car so the angles were staged as best as I could so you could see for yourself the lack of portions. The fries picture has no tricks. There was no depth to the container. What you see is all I got. Hardly much for a side. The gyro is a bit rougher to show size but I can say there was a slightly above average amount of meat on there and then as you can see, barely any veggies. I guess, thanks for giving me more of the expensive part?? The whole thing with taxes was over $9, and that's with a small (probably 8 to 10 ounce cup) drink. I couldn't justify buying into this again. It was worth trying, but they need to step up their game before I...
Read moreThey say a picture is worth a thousand words… well these pictures do not even come close to doing justice. This was my first, but absolutely not my last visit to Gyros & More. I ordered the lamb skewer plate with hummus and tabouli, and the 2 chicken kabobs with dolmeh and feta. Pita and garlic sauce was served on the side. The chicken was one of the juiciest pieces I have had in a long time, from anywhere! Seasoned so beautifully! The lamb I asked for rare and boy was it! Perfect for how I like my meat cooked and also large juicy and succulent pieces of tender meat. The seasoning, again, was perfection! The dolmeh was great! Sour but without that chew so many grape leaves have. The rice melted on my tongue. The hummus, puréed with a little grit and a good amount of tasty paprika and oil. The tabouli was fresh! …This is where I add my feta! I must have feta in this salad so I always, no matter where I go, get an extra side. The garlic sauce was more of a velvet yogurt with a strong taste of garlic. Also delish and very unique. The plating for delivery is never a masterpiece but this was so beautiful once I added it to my own plate and removed the wood skewers. Combined this was a meal just for one, myself! The prices are very reasonable for the quality of the ingredients and luckily I was able to bring home leftovers from lunch which...
