Farm House — Restaurant in Mexia

We ate there today May 8, 2022 which is Mother’s Day after hearing the place was good from somebody we knew.

When we drove up for the first time ever we noticed their sign out front had different foods that they had but Catfish was in huge big letters so this led us to believe that Catfish was really going to be good.

They were really busy but they were table’s still available and we set down and the waitress came to take our order and wanted to know if we wanted any appetizers and to go ahead and take our entrée order at the same time. I told her very specifically we wanted onion rings but I did not want the meal to come until after we had time to eat the onion rings.

She came back about five or so minutes later and we did order the entrée which was one small catfish and a medium catfish but again I told her I wanted the onion rings first. About five minutes after we placed the meal order our entrées came out without the Onion Rings.

It was very obvious to me that they batch fry the catfish and they bach fry the french fries and when you place your order they just go to the pan that they’re in take the catfish and french fries out dip the beans and coleslaw and bring it right away because it only took about five minutes from the time we ordered to the time it came to the table all the while we have never seen the onion rings .

About five minutes later after the food had already came our onion rings finally showed up and we ordered a large onion rings and there were maybe 12 on the whole platter.

If people think this is great Catfish they really need to get out more because even though it was hot they were not crispy and do not know what type of batter they use but this type of batter will never get crispy it was more of a mushy consistency and the batter fell off of the fish.

This will be one and done for us, I wanted great catfish and I did not get great catfish and it’s obvious to me that whoever takes your order is not in sync with the people in the back because the people in the back bring out food whenever they want to and do not listen to the waitress to who you explain how you want your food...

Pros: food is good, the people who work there are nice. Their in person service is 4-5 stars. Cons: Orders made online are accepted even if the business is closed. We happened to order on a holiday (neither their website, Facebook page or signage said they were closed. We looked ahead of ordering). Payment will be charged regardless and it will take 3-5 days to get a credit. Order should have never gone through if you are closed.

Update: the owner reached out very quickly(same day as the original review) and I truly appreciate it (not just here but by phone). I understand the technical issues that can effect a modern business. Once my refund is secured I’ll update my review. Mistakes happen, and by all appearances currently that’s all it was. Thank you for reaching out and taking my complaint seriously enough to go through the trouble to call me. That alone may make the difference between me ordering again in the future :)

Final Update: I've updated my review because of the fast response. I was credited for the charge today. One other thing I will note again. "I apologize as well for only changing on google that we will be closed Labor Day." We checked online BEFORE ordering Google search for the business which said hours MAY be affected but did not state closed. Facebook and the ordering website said nothing about being closed. I understand mistakes happen, I just want you to know that Google didn't say you were closed either.

Stopped in for a big family meal after a funeral nearby. Had the fried catfish and fried shrimp with fries, beans and Cole slaw. Cornmeal coated catfish was fresh, well cleaned (none of the gray fatty stuff) and hot. Could have been cooked just a little longer to get it crispy I think. The shrimp were battered and fresh. Batter needed to be thinned out a little. Fries were ok needed more time to get crispy. Think they were frozen bagged ones. Coleslaw was tasty. Beans were good too. Had 10 at our table and about 20 people in our party initially 15 or so more came about 45min later, but after we had already been served. Food service was fast and accurate. The waitstaff however was slow. They only assigned 1 waitress to the room. All in all a good place to go eat and spend time with...
