Local Option — Restaurant in Michigan City

Local Option is a bar that not only offers a great selection of drinks but also serves some of the best deep dish pizza you can find in the area. If you're on the hunt for a true Chicago-style stuffed pizza, look no further, but be prepared for a couple of drawbacks.

The pizza at Local Option is top-notch. It's reasonably priced considering the generous serving sizes and the variety of toppings available, and they offer some unique Pizza of the Months from what I saw last time. A 14-inch pie probably weighs in at a hefty five pounds, offering excellent value for your money. The BBQ pulled pork stuffed mac and cheese is another must-try dish, albeit incredibly decadent and filling - almost too filling, if there's such a thing!

However, as much as I enjoy the food, there are a couple of significant drawbacks. Firstly, they don't offer delivery, so you have to pick up your order. While the bar is relatively nearby for me, the fact that they allow smoking inside makes the pickup experience less than pleasant. The smoke was so bad last time my friend had to step outside for air while we waited.

Secondly, there doesn't seem to be any dedicated hosts or takeout/wait staff. I've occasionally found myself waiting awkwardly at the bar until a staff member notices and brings my order. The lack of an online ordering system for pickup is another inconvenience, as you have to call in to place your orders.

In conclusion, Local Option serves up some truly delicious Chicago-style cuisine, but their pickup experience could use some work. If they could separate the dining experience from the bar, perhaps by having a dedicated pickup area and staff, it would go a long way in enhancing the overall customer experience. This is my experience with this place: We were visiting Indiana Dunes for a two day vacation, and saw this place had good reviews. First red flag was we couldn’t find a parking spot right away. We went behind the building through a back alley and found some spaces, but then a crack head walked up to our car meowing at us. I was scared to leave the car there. That wasn’t the business’s fault though, just their parking situation. Regardless, we walked in, and instantly it smelt intensely of smoke and was hot inside. People were smoking, but hey, some bars allow that. We couldn’t breathe clean air which sucked, but we’re guests, so we tried to ignore it. The bartender, some older lady, walked up to us aggressively and said “you have ids?”, in a boarder-line rude manner. When I gave her my id, she looked me up and down very intensely for a good five seconds, like I’m underage or have a fake id (I’m 24). Instantly I got uncomfortable and started realizing we made a mistake. The place was beautiful and had a fun look to it, but we felt like we weren’t welcome there from the moment we walked in. Staff was not friendly in the slightest (Maybe it was because we were younger?). She was smiling with everyone except us. It low key hurt. Ended up getting our food, which was not good, and was never asked how we were or if I wanted another drink (I did). We left within 20 minutes. I was very sad about the experience. Fire 🔥 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Authentic chicago tavern style pizza. Fresh raw sausage put on the pizza, sauce was amazing with a buttery crunchy/ crispy crust. And the prices are insanely cheap. 2- 14" thin crust (one sausage one half sausage half cheese) and a 10" stuffed cheese plus 2 pepsi's was only $48. I'll definitely be back and highly, highly, highly recommend this place over villa nova and any other pizza place I've tried in Michigan or Indiana. 100% chicago pizza. This is coming from an Italian who was born and raised in Chicago, worked in quite a few pizza places out there, favorite food is pizza(kind of a pizza snob) And I make my own at home, until now. I'll be going here a lot.

The stuffed actually had the second dough layer between the cheese and sauce. 6 critique on the stuffed is that it needed more sauce. Other than that, it was on point as well

Amazing and fast service as well. They have this really cool horse shoe bar that you can sit in regular chairs instead of bar stools. The bartender floor is lower than outside the bar. Pretty cool set up

Update 5-31-24 Grabbed another pizza today to take home and it was severely under cooked. Whoever is making pizza really needs to set a timer so all the pizza's are cooked properly. I'd like to keep coming here but the consistency needs...
