The absolutely best sides all made by the servers aunt. The baked beans carried that "grandma's secret recipe" flavor that you can almost taste the homemade smoked pork belly bacon and molasses as it was in childhood, the potato salad, perfectly creamy, melt in your mouth feel chased down with her home garden canned green beans. The homemade Mac n cheese rivals Michelin rated fare. When I requested butter for the homemade cornbread, the server produced it, but then challenged it wasn't necessary...I cannot say she was wrong. It was really a surprise to find such out of the park offerings in the unassuming little corner bbq joint. I have sampled bbq fare from just about every bbq famous restaurant city and state in the US. Smoque, or Carson's in Chicago, Bo's rib shack in Harvey IL, Jerk in Markham IL, Legends on State St, Kansas City BBQ icon Famous Dave's, Dallas famous stockyards Burnt Ends, Memphis homemade smoked bologna, North and South Carolina fare, even off the map offerings from the west coast. I have to put this meal in my top 5 just on the sides alone. Today's lunch was slightly hampered by the unavailability of my personal favorite, beef brisket. Nonetheless I persevered, and settled on tips and hot link. I was served up an appropriately sized basket of tender smoked rib tips generously accented with their in house sauce, and a slightly smaller than I am accustomed to hot link similarly dressed on white bread. (Think home size-sampler plate) With two generous sized sides. A perfectly portioned lunch serving and the loving touch taste is free with purchase. My dining partner had the pulled pork sandwich with green beans and potato salad. Don't miss this sandwich! Perfectly prepared tender and juicy, smoked to perfection pork picnic also drizzled with the in house sauce. If I were to make any drawback suggestions, the lack of any alternative sauces would probably be it. Sometimes bbq isn't BBQ for some if they don't have their preferred bend of sauce. (See Carolina mustard, KC sweet n tangy, or St Louis rich n zesty. Dallas brown sugar base/citrus for glazing etc.) Any way it goes, if you are in Dune's National Lakeshore and want to temper an appetite for BBQ, Try this place. What a...
Read moreYesterday I witnessed pandemonium at this place. I've never waited so long at a restaurant to not receive my order.
I got an order from Doordash, just a simple fish dinner. When I got there, I was quoted "soon." After 20 minutes it became apparent they were being unspecific about the time because they weren't sure how long it was going to take but didn't want to tell me that. Multiple people came in and attempted to order, most of them either walking out or demanding refunds.
One couple ordered the rib tip dinner. They waited, no joke, half an hour just to be told they don't have the rib tips. They were mad, which I think is reasonable. What wasn't reasonable was the waitress was unapologetic and actually got upset at them when they demanded their money back (they paid for a dinner the restaurant didn't have ahead of time!). They both took turns yelling at each other, while she tried to guilt trip them because she brought her kid there and he witnessed the argument (sucks for the child but it's called the consequences of your actions, be honest and humble about mistakes next time and people won't get mad at you). After they left, she said out loud, "Y'all making black people look bad!" She's black herself, but she's the only person who brought race into the picture, which I felt was unnecessary.
After an hour of waiting, I contacted Doordash support and managed to get the order cancelled. So I waited an hour to not even receive my order. There should be no circumstance where it takes over an hour to deep fry an order of fish. And to top it off, the attitudes of the wait staff was unapologetic, dishonest about wait times, and seeing them turn it on the customers for "being impatient." Bet if your child was waiting an hour for your order you'd get impatient as well. Would not recommend this place on a Friday night until they learn what it means to work in customer service. Integrity is the name of the game, and the staff did not...
Read moreI’m not usually one to complain, I understand no restaurant is perfect but I am sooo disappointed after our visit. I’ve been coming to up-n-smoke for years and I have absolutely loved it everytime. But my boyfriend and I came in tonight for our biweekly date night. We came in shortly before 5 p.m. and it was not busy. We waited about 10 minutes before someone acknowledged us, after a few minutes one girl came up to us and took our drink order and told us the other girl would come give us menus. Again a few minutes later the other girl finally comes up and takes our drink order again and gives us menus. It took about 10 minutes to get our drinks and we ordered. After about 25 minutes of waiting for chicken tips and a pulled pork sandwich the waitress comes up and tells us that they’re out of pulled pork and offered an appetizer and a discount and asked if we wanted something else. We chose the brisket sandwich. It took about 10-15 minutes to get the appetizer and then another 15-20 minutes to get our food. The chicken tips were cold and the brisket sandwich contained mostly fatty pieces. I asked for boxes and the bill. At this point the restaurant was basically empty. It took quite a bit of time for us to get boxes and the bill. The bill did not contain the “discount” the waitress offered. At that point I was so irritated that I just paid and left. I will not be back unfortunately. The meals that we had were not worth the wait nor the...
