Tried Middletown location four times in the first few months they opened ordering for two adults and dropping in area of $100 per takeout visit, each time ordered ribs, each time got ribs with only a thin layer tough bark and no meat along with bones with nothing eatable on them, bones where dark grey. At least at famous Dave’s you got meat and frankly tasted better than any black hogs so far, sad they closed. The first three times I also ordered pulled pork and only first time received the correct amount of delicious pork shoulder, but the next two times the amount required all the sides and the styrofoam container to be on scale and amount of meat was about 1/4 cup. The management always apologized but only with words. I figured at these incredible high prices and repeatedly get idle run around that overall cheaper to just buy a XXL green egg or Traeger grill which are very expensive. Been a few months now and i figure first 4 months the money I would have spent at black hog for meatless bones and rip off portions both grills including supplies I’ve broke even, plus tummy actually gets food, and I don’t have to beg for or pay extra for tablespoon of sauce. Off to penn meats in Hagerstown for more meats, suggest you do same. Yes, I would prefer to buy and not cook my own, but portions and prices and quality in frederick since Dave’s closed is prohibitive. Side benefit of doing your own, money saved you can cook meat for family and friends, the pork shoulders made excellent holiday gifts and extra special since a lot of folks staying home these days. Oh, best cole slaw to date for taste, and cost per amount is Watson’s in Jefferson, well worth the drive and pick up a Potomac sandwich from the barn diagonal across street. For curious folks, the egg did great in both cold weather and high winds and with stack option can smoke several racks and shoulders, the traeger is better at quick meals like steaks and grilled pineapple and other short quick items. For newbies, get an app that shows grill and meat temps. Folks at Mason Dixon bbq between Costco and airport are fantastic, friendly, and set everything up on the deck next day which included going over how to use it and combinations of options (e.g., stone/rack/cast iron) so different meats/veg/fruits could be on grill same time. Actually eat more and getting trimmer cooking at home, oh try dizzy pig pineapple rub, yum. Mix in a bit of powerder espresso sounds strange but yum. The worst part was the egg app controlling temps, to spare you he##, you must update the device software first (I wish done by vendor but wow awesome item once configured ... if hard just call support ... excellent). Another side note, vacuum packed pork shoulder/butts like at Costco will stay pink inside even when done, this is common for meats that were...
Read moreReally good BBQ but the hours are like the mid-west 30 years ago. My friends & myself showed up at 8:45pm and hoped for the best. We were informed that we would need to order & take it with us because they close at 9pm on the weekend ! Nobody stays open anymore except for some diners, it's crazy !! So even though the food is good, I have to give them 3.5 Stars. We have run across those rare places that let you eat while they closed the restaurant. Once in a while we actually find places in our travels that stay open just for you. That really goes a long way in creating a life long relationship with a place that is willing to go that little bit extra for your business & treat you as someone who is welcome and appreciated, not a problem or inconvenience. I have since been back and I believe they are now over-priced. They have opened several locations & have lost the eye of the tiger. When they were smaller & trying hard to prove themselves special as the little guy it was much better. Like any business that you have grown up with from humble beginnings, something is lost when they go big. I'm guessing the prices have some to do with the supply chain and inflation. But I think it also has to do with the overhead of having which is virtually a chain restaurant now. I'm always on the hunt for that small gem of a BBQ place & will update everyone when they I find that new place. If your in Hampstead Maryland try Outlaw BBQ Smokehouse. You won't be...
Read moreA great place to get bbq in Middletown This restaurant, Black Hog BBQ, started in Frederick, Maryland and has grown into a small restaurant chain with four active locations in the state. Their website states that the black hog is the rarest breed of hogs and they decided to name their company after it. This location, the Middletown restaurant, is the newest addition to the group. We were driving through town and looking for a bite to eat and decided to try it. It is a little off the main road but pretty easy to get to. It is in a strip center on a corner unit with plenty of parking. We were greeted as we entered and taken to a table. The waitress, Athena, did a wonderful job for first-timers like us. She told us that most of the locations are similar to this one with a restaurant and a bar. I ordered a chopped pork platter (sandwich and a side of French fries) and a sweet tea. The sandwich and fries were excellent. The tea had a different taste from the ones that I am used to so that was not my favorite. Food is served on metal trays with butcher paper below and plastic silverware so don’t expect fancy plates. The staff was wonderful, the location was very clean and the prices were very reasonable for the amount and quality of food that you get. Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely recommend it to fellow travellers looking for a good bbq...
