This is a pretty good Chinese joint. They've been here for a while now. The owner is a really good dude. He always remembers people, and is very genuine. And while I can't say everything is great here, and let's be honest no place has everything great, this place definitely has some hits. I'm a big fan of the chicken and shrimp entrees here, and the combo plates that have the entrees in them. Soups, and apps too.
Some places have great apps, but not the entrees. This place is the place to go for those. I really like the chicken with garlic sauce here in particular. But they're all pretty good. The chicken with broccoli, or the moo goo gai pan are definite winners. Same with the shrimp versions of them. I've not tried the beef, or pork here. I rarely get those dishes at Chinese restaurants.
The fried rice is good, and I've a few friends that really like it. It doesn't blow me away though. But I usually get a combo with it. So I obviously enjoy it. The egg rolls are really good here. Not a fan of the fried shrimp appetizer. It's breaded, not battered. So be aware. I'm sure if you ask they have battered. I say this, because the sweet and sour shrimp is always battered at Chinese restaurants. The battered chicken fingers, and sweet and sour chicken are good too. Chow mein sandwich is good too.
And I've eaten soup here more times then I can remember. They've got a really nice soup. Pretty much every one I've tried too, which is most, if not all of them. Definitely will take care of your comfort food fix. They do deliver too. I haven't had delivery from here in years though. So I'm not sure about hours, if there's a charge, or how far they go. But you can just call them and ask of course.
In the grand scheme of Aquidneck Island Chinese restaurants. I would put them in the top 3. The other restaurant in Newport with the same name, China Star III does not have anything to do with this place at all, and is probably the worst place to go in Newport. So please don't compare them. It's not fair. The owner here is like a Rocket Surgeon in comparison to those mentally...
Read moreEdit: Google won't let me add another review, so here's an update. Post Covid, 🤞still the best Chinese takeout in the area, and I've tried them all. Especially love the garlic sauce. +++++++++++++ My favorite Chinese takeout in the region, I eat regularly from their lunch special menu. Good prices, large portions, flavorful sauces - their kitchen knows what it's doing.
Of special interest these days, they recently reopened after shutting down due to the pandemic. I have to say I am more impressed with their modifications to prevent community spread of the virus than with any other business I have visited: tables pushed aside to prevent seating, of course; a full, counter to ceiling plexiglass barrier between staff/kitchen and customers with a small opening for food and payments; two cups of pens, one clean for signing and one to put the used ones in; hand sanitizer for customer use; and counter staff wearing both masks and gloves.
Oh - and the garlic sauce, rice, and spring rolls are...
Read moreWow. The negative reviews are not up to date. I'm a tourist who wanted delivery to my hotel. I live in Connecticut so good Chinese food is few and far between. This place rocks. I got Chow Mein, Spring Rolls, Boneless ribs, and general tsos for $24 after taxes. No delivery fee on doordash. The chicken came with fried rice, the rice was the worst item, and it was pretty decent, great texture. The boneless ribs were large, and weren't hard to swallow, dad used to make them at home, this places' taste almost as good as dad. The general tsos was crispy, which is rare for delivery, the spring rolls were quite average, yet still tasty. I ordered 2 spring rolls but they threw a free eggroll in too. I ordered the "local style" Chow Mein. It was nothing I expected. Like a beef stew that comes with lots of crispy noodles, very tasty but not my cup of tea. Overall, come here, the delivery was quick, food was good, and had good prices, it really is near...
