I wasn't greeted when I entered, but once I assessed the menu and stepped up to order, I was waited on in a friendly way, so all that was fine. I ordered the small chicken teriyaki sub w/ a bag of chips and a bottled soda "for here". My food was made to order and was ready in less than 5 minutes.
As I waited, I searched for a table to sit down. Two other tables were occupied and the other six tables were filthy. I found a half of a table that was the least dirty, grabbed some napkins from the counter and wiped off my side of the table.
My food was hot, but the roll was dry and a bit stale. The chicken and veggies were tasty and cooked just right, but sort of got lost within the roll. The proportions were off, so I found myself taking at least 4 bites of empty roll and a mouthful of disappointment. I'm not sure the sandwich was worth $8.50 for such a miniscule portion.
My biggest issue comes from the overall unclean feeling I had since I walked in. I don't know how else to describe it other than "skeezy". The air seems stale and everything smells of dirty mop water. Perhaps the exhaust vents above the grill need a deep clean. Perhaps all the walls and surfaces need a solid wipe down. At the very least, the tables, chairs, and floor should be checked periodically and cleaned. Unsurprisingly, there's also been a few flies stopping by my table. Everything just seems dingy and greasy and I fear my clothes will stink of the place when I leave. I also fear that poor attention to cleanliness front of house may represent the same filth in the kitchen.
I've seen at least eight different employees in the hour I've been here and it has not been busy whatsoever. Granted - I think there's been a shift change - but I have yet to see one employee come out to the dining room and address the filthy tables. I've seen three come out to use the restroom, but all have ignored the tables and the scattered food and napkin bits below the counter.
I understand the significant challenge of staffing right now. You clearly have some people working for you, but they are letting you down significantly. I've only lived here in Rhode Island for one week and noticed D'Angelos a few times and finally decided to stop by for a late lunch. Based on my experience here today, unfortunately I don't think...
Read moreI'm originally from New England and was back with my husband for a family wedding as well as time visiting family. We were at my brother's in Newport when we thought we'd try to find a good lobster roll (we had had several in Maine and New Hampshire) in the area. Well, I Googled "lobster rolls" and d' Angelo's popped up. Many, many years ago I loved d' Angelo's when I lived in Portsmouth, NH (#9 steak sandwich!) and we headed over to see how they did lobster rolls.
Oh, my heavens! Best of the whole trip! We each had the "small," which had more lobster meat than any previous ones, with just a tad of mayo and a little shredded lettuce (optional). I can't imagine how big the medium or large ones might be! The shop was immaculate, and the staff? Well, let me go on...
My husband had a serious stroke this spring and he has difficulty with confusion, memory, communication, and comprehension. He became confused and a bit loud as we were trying to decide what size lobster roll to get or whether he preferred another type of sandwich. Truthfully, he was a bit of a handful. Jessica, the manager, was taking our order with the patience of a saint, clearly explaining the options (many) he was questioning, and so respectful of a 77-year-old man who was struggling to communicate. After he'd gone to our booth to await our order, I apologized to Jessica for his brashness, and that it was his stroke, not him, that caused his rudeness. She immediately asked if there was anything they could do to be of help - genuinely caring, mind you, not just lip service - and ended up offering us a cup of lobster bisque (fabulous!) which she covered. Bless her and her crew who all reflected her compassion and patience.
So delicious was our late afternoon meal that we ordered the same (two lobster rolls and a lobster bisque) to take back to the house for later. But the memory of superior customer service and genuine caring lingers. Thank you for the best meal by the best crew of...
Read moreIf I could give no stars I would! This evening I ordered two hot sandwiches through delivery. When I called tonight at 8pm a girl answered the phone and asked if I wanted delivery or pick up, so I said delivery Gave her my order, and was told that the food would be delivered. 45 minutes later no food. One hour later, no food. So I proceed to call them and inquire about the whereabouts of our food? The same girl tells me: your sandwiches have been waiting here for an hour , because the person who took your order, did not specify door dash on the order. Mind you , she was the order taker! I said , I cannot believe no one at the shop called me? She said well theyve been sitting here an hour, you can come and get them before we close in a few minutes. I said ,so I'm going to be offered cold, " hot sandwiches" with no refund?! She said , yes that's correct. I said well I want my door dash charges taken off .. Mind you , the charge for the 2 sandwiches through door dash was $32.47 .. she said we can't do that .. Another guy gets on the phone and says the same thing and hangs up the phone on me twice!! RUDE RUDE workers or manager! And they basically stole my $32.47 and I've been left with no sandwiches and stolen money ! I am reporting this to the headquarters and the police ... I have checked my credit card transactions, a couple of times and the charges are still there! The AUDACITY!!! Shame on you D'Angelos Sandwiches in Middletown RI ! I will be sure to tell everyone I know in the area, as well as file a report with the local police and contact the D'Angelo's Headquarters! Disgusting behavior! August 9 ,...
