Now let me just start by saying this, you may think that partially through this review, that you were reading a review of something other than a restaurant, but that’s just the thing... this isn’t just a restaurant... it’s an experience, a flashback, a place that’s been plucked out of time. So my wife and I, were planning another date night, and she presented me with a place to eat. All it took were two words: polish golumpki also spelled guampky (for those who may not know what this is IE: stuffed cabbage). A down home, family diner, located in downtown Milford was the destination. Tucked away, in a very picturesque location, your arrival and dining experience, will reflect that awesome small town feel, that it captures ever so well. Once inside you'll be transported back in time, to a restaurant that brings back a flood of great memories. There was a small sign that said "please seat yourself", so we inconsequentially sat ourselves at the counter. Upon sitting, this awarded us what I would consider, the best seat in the house. From this vantage point, I was really able to take in all of what this restaurant captured, and it does it oh so well. Czapski's really brought us back to the restaurant's of years past, and accentuated the entire experience from start to finish. It’s the little things like the Three Stooges cookie jar, old fashioned milkshake maker, wall decor, to the perfectly staged dining area, seating you amongst other aficionado, that just makes it feel so good being there. All of this, and I haven’t even gotten to the food yet! I ordered the Guampky dinner, and my wife, the City Chicken dinner. Both were served with some pretty incredible mashed potatoes & gravy, fresh seasoned green beans, Kapusta (sauerkraut), and bread & butter. I can say this without reservation, that the Guampky, was the best that I’ve ever had, hands down. Through the years, I’ve tried dozens of iterations, and I’m dead serious about the above claim. The meat (with rice) was so tender, and amazingly flavorful. The seasoning, was unique to this iteration, and was flawlessly carried out. The cabbage was cooked to perfection as well. The typical pairing of tomato sauce accompanying the Guampky, was a perfect compliment to it, as usual. If you are a fan of sauerkraut, you most definitely will not be let down, as I was not. At Czapski’s you better believe it’s going to be traditional, and at the top of it’s game. It’s included with all of the Polish dinners on the menu. My wife’s dish, “City Chicken” was something that she loved, as a child. I watched in eager anticipation, as she took her first bite, closed her eyes, then stopped, and looked directly at me. She didn’t even say a word, and I knew that things just got serious. She hasn’t had City Chicken as good as Czapski’s, for almost 30 years! I tried it, and it was very good! The meat was juicy, and was full of flavor. If you’ve ever had City Chicken in the past, and have been searching for it, trust me, look no further. Topping off our experience, we ordered a piece of the chocolate mousse cake to share (from a nice selection of deserts). It was moist, fresh, quite delicious, and the proverbial cherry on top of a wonderful dining experience. Long story short, this was a special evening for my wife, and I. The menu isn’t five pages long, and for that I’m glad. The menu choices that are offered, are as good as it gets. When it comes to polish dishes, this is dining at its finest. There’s also some more classic American fare options as well: Pork Roast, Beef Brisket, and even harkening back to many of our childhood dinners, Pan-Fried Chicken Livers (You know you miss it!). This is by far my longest winded review, but trust me, I can’t express how much we appreciated finding a treasure such as this. We need more places like this, in all of our lives. It’s the little things that matter, and Czapski’s does...
Read moreSome of the wait staff are very friendly and professional, others are not...rude, brusque, rush/intimidate you to place your order--when you tell them you're "not ready" you need a few minutes, they come back 15-20 min later, very confusing behavior. We've been in there 4 times. Each time the owner or someone from the kitchen is talking politics with customers. It's your establishment, your 1st amendment rights, etc. I don't think it's the best practice-- it gets old. It becomes a problem when offensive talk about other races comes into play. I'm not talking about complaining about criminals, I get that. I overheard offensive things being said about a particular race in general, about decent people. It should serve you well to remember it wasn't that long ago that Poles were demonized, bullied and treated with prejudice, for no valid reason. As for the food...portions are quite small for the price. Once your order is placed you're lucky to get one refill on your drink. I thought you were supposed to get complimentary bread/butter with entrees but we only got this on one visit. City chicken is tender and flavorful. Green beans are decent. Gravy is delicious. Pierogi are bland. Golabki are very small, decent flavor. Mine had a longish black hair in it last visit (I have short blond hair), that was disgusting. I eat low carb so always ask for no potatoes, extra beans or kapusta and have yet to get extra green beans or kapusta...cheap move on their part. See lots of rave reviews for their meat balls so thought I'd try those--don't bother unless you like bread stuffing. They were mainly bread with little nubs of meat here and there, very mushy. Gravy was good at least. Chicken soup is fantastic! Frustrating thing is, these items are regulars on the menu but many times they're unavailable (such as Golabki and chicken noodle soup recently) because owner/cook didn't get them made. Pro tip: maybe a little more time in the kitchen and less time spent on the political stuff. What I find interesting is that another business in the area has Polish food brought in from Detroit instead of utilizing...
Read moreDO NOT ORDER CATERING FROM HERE! Ordered – Confirmed Twice – Driver never showed up and we were not notified of any issues and had to cancel our luncheon last minute. Our company had ordered catering services (food + delivery) for our holiday luncheon on 12/22/23. It was ordered many weeks in advance with the owner Lisa who was quite adamant that it was no problem - 27 people + delivery to our office in Auburn Hills. I verified delivery with her (we were paying extra due to the distance) to make sure because we could arrange pick up either the night before (we would reheat) or the morning of if this was going to be an issue. Lisa even called back 2 days after booking (from her cell number-important later on) to let me know that she had talked to the delivery person and let me know it was not going to be a problem. I then called and confirmed with her 3 days prior to the event to make sure we were all set – Yes according to Lisa. The day of the luncheon – about 20 minutes after delivery time I called the restaurant to see if the delivery person was delayed or perhaps lost. I was baffled by no answer at the restaurant and a message that the mailbox was full and could not leave a message. We called a couple of times over the next 10 minutes while hoping the driver would show. Fortunately, I remembered that Lisa had called my cell from her cell phone, so I was able to go back in history and look up her number. Once answered, I questioned about the driver being late and was told that they weren’t coming but could get it in the car now and be at our office in 1-1/2 hours which would be 2 hours after our scheduled catering delivery. I find this very unprofessional and inexcusable from a business perspective. No call to let us know (Lisa had 2 different phone numbers to our office/cell), of any issues with food or delivery, and if we didn’t call to find out what was going on - we would not have been notified at all. No apologies from anyone that they had completely screwed up in any way. I would NOT and will NEVER do business with this...
