Today I went with family members to try Old Street Dim Sum in the Milford Plaza for the first time. It is located next to a Dollar Tree Store. We heard about this new dim sum and hot pot restaurant after it was featured on yesterday's evening news. I am glad I watched the news about it since I live an hour away and otherwise, would not know about this place. We arrived at about 11 am for dim sum. As soon as we entered the restaurant we were greeted by a friendly worker at the restaurant. He wanted to know if we were there for dim sim or hotpot. We told him we were there for dim sum. We were given a tablet for ordering the dim sum dishes. It is a great way to order since pictures appears with the name of the dish .We kept adding the dishes we wanted to order. This tablet not only kept a running tally of the food we ordered , it kept a tally of the total cost of what was ordered. So it was no surprise about how much we owe at the end of the meal. The restaurant has just been opened for a month. It looks nice, spacious, and very clean.
We were asked about the type of tea we would like to drink with our meal. We ordered chrysanthemum tea. It was not the typical chrysanthemum tea but it was a more tasty, fragant tea. It has to do with using more tender, younger chrysanthemum flowers for the tea. This tea paired well with the dim sum ordered which included har gao shrimp dumpling, siu long bao soup dumpling, eggplant with shrimp paste, shou mai dumpling made of pork mixed with shrimp, shrimp in rice noodle, sesame balls, walnut buns and chicken feet. The food we ordered came out quickly. The plates were staggered so we were able to eat a couple of dishes before new ones came out. Everything was nice and warm. The server was very nice and considerate. I am happy to report the food is very good and our long drive to Old Street was worth it. I usually do not like chicken feet, but the way it was made here, made me like it since it was very gelatinous. The soup buns were very delicious. The sesame balls were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The har gao shrimp dumpling didnot disappoint. The shrimp in it were big. The pork and shrimp dumpling called siu mai were big and tasty. The eggplant with shrimp paste is one of the best we have had! The rice noodle roll with shrimp, har cheong ,could use a chewier, thicker skin. The rice roll skin was thinner than what was expected. The walnut milk bun looked liked a walnut because of the impression on the skin of the bun. It was nice and creamy and had bits of walnut. It made for a nice dessert. The 3 of us were very full. We liked the quick, friendly service and the tasty food. We will definitely come back for more dim sum. We may even try the hotpot. We hope this restaurant continues to attract people who want to eat dim sum or hotpot. We definitely recommend this Old Street Dim Sum Restaurant. It's nice to know that Connecticut has it's own great dim...
Read more4.5 stars: Visited Old Street for dim sum today, and was overall satisfied. We got our usual dim sum favorites (har kow, sticky rice, siu mai, spare ribs with black beans, chicken feet - ok that’s mine), except they were not able to make beef cheung fun (rice noodle roll with beef) bc they were out of beef?! We were there when they opened so hopefully they will get some beef next door! The food we ordered is on par with what I’ve had in Chinatown. I especially liked their chives and shrimp dumpling. For those who like the sweetened soy sauce that go over the cheung fun, you may want to ask for sugar. I suspect that is the secret ingredient in Chinatown. Next time I will visit their sauce bar!
Anyway, there have been a lot of comments about the service, but it was fine for us. Our initial wave of dishes came out pretty quickly; the add-ons took a little longer, but we were still in and out of the restaurant within an hour. We were a party of 3 and fit into the booth comfortably. The booths will likely fit up to 6, maybe 7 with a chair on the side. There are also private rooms with round tables should your party size need that accommodation, but I suspect you might need to make a reservation. The restaurant atmosphere is great - in fact, after the restaurant filled in a little more (you will see Asian families enjoying time together) I felt like I was a kid out in one of NYC Chinatown’s fancier dim sum restaurants like Jin Fong on Elizabeth Street or Golden Unicorn on East Broadway; if I closed my eyes I could appreciate the chopsticks clicking and the conversations, including cajoling a toddler to try a bite of something.
The service was fine - there were many folks checking in on us and our waiter was very helpful.
We’ll return for more dim sum and definitely plan to try the hot pot! If you’ve read down to here, I hope you’ll give them a chance. They may not be perfect the first time you visit, but I’m sure things will work out in the long run. I’d love to see...
Read moreIt was disappointing. My dad had stopped in a few times during the week and raved about the dim sum spare ribs with pumpkin and congee. Unfortunately, they were not prepared for this weekend. The staff was overwhelmed. Not very organized and wait staff didn't communicate well with each other or customers. Shrimp rice roll was worst I'd ever seen - thin, bland and looked messy. They didn't have any more beef rice roll and had run out or didn't have the congee and a few other things we ordered. So we tried to double our order to meet the hunger of our 6 diners. They over delivered on the spare ribs and we had to turn them away. In the course of an hour and a half we received a total of 4 spare rib, 1 shrimp roll, 1Fried Pork dumpling, and 1 fried sesame ball. 1 pot of tea and we had to chase down a second - 1 member didn't even get tea the first pot. No water even though we asked for it twice. Then when we asked to just pay for what we got - we received a bill of $175. Needless to say, we weren't happy. After bringing it up to the counter because we weren't going to sit around anymore - they still "revised" the bill and gave it back to us with NO changes. Had to argue to get them to understand we didn't get 90% of our order. As I said, maybe they weren't prepared for the amount of people on Father's day weekend - but this was very disappointing. Too many servers just running around - no assigned sections, no organization.
My dad will go back during the week but I don't know if the family will. Not worth the headache. Almost ruined...
