FINALLY made it in to V & R this morning. To say I’m picky about baked goods is putting it mildly. Walking in to the store, I was taken back by how everything looked. Beautiful baked items, but wonder how they taste. You’ve all eaten baked goods that look fantastic but taste like the plastic fruit that populated bowls at your grandma’s house. Just me, huh? Whatever. Point is, would these lovely baked delights taste as good as they look. The delightful young lady packed up a raspberry danish, chocolate croissant, almond croissant, and Beast croissant (egg, bacon, cheese, tomato, and jalapeño stuffed) for us and off we went.
I couldn’t wait until I got home, so I ripped a hunk of almond croissant off and popped it into my mouth. Ya’ll, I nearly burst into tears! Crisp and flaky, yet tender inside. The marzipan wasn’t sickeningly sweet like many almond croissants are. Not overly dusted with powdered sugar, either. Perfect amount of sliced almonds sprinkled on the outside. Pure HEAVEN. Rushed home to sample the rest.
When we got home, I went in for a nibble of the chocolate croissant, but my son wolfed that thing down in seconds. “It’s really good.” Gulp. Might have to run up for an afternoon snack without my traitorous son…
The cute young lady that helped us advised to warm up the Beast croissant in a 250 degree for 10 minutes. “Poke a whole in it so it warms through.” Got home and followed her instructions to the letter. O M G! Perfectly crisp. Warmed all the way through. And the flavors… Goodness ME! When I tell it was good, I mean it was GOOD. Absolutely delicious.
Do yourself a favor and make your way to this bakery and treat yourself to something delicious. And I’ll go ahead and say it: those croissants are BETTER than Gourmandise!! I said...
Read moreI bought one of the apple strudels earlier this year around the time they opened and I have been craving it since. I wanted to buy one today and they were sold out so I got a pumpkin danish.
The pumpkin danish is mostly a rich bread that is similar in flavor to the store bought dough in the popping tins, but a bit more balanced, and I appreciated that because I don’t like things so rich. It’s mostly a cream cheese frosting, and some thick granulated sugar on the top. I was pleased with the flavors of these two, but I hardly tasted pumpkin. I smelled the pumpkin and it smelled kind of browned, like when you have browning apples after they’ve been cut but I tasted it with my finger and the swirl of pumpkin on there was good.
I loved the apple strudel though. It was filled with an apple pie like filling but it seemed there was minced apples rather then slices like in a pie, and the strudel is a bread, much like with the danish I got today and it was super good, first time trying...
