Update several months after my initial five-star review:
I came in with two friends on a Sunday evening at about 5:15pm. It was not busy at all. There was maybe one other table of customers in the whole building. Strangely, we were not given menus or offered water until about 20 minutes after we were seated despite being shown to our table very quickly.
It may have been a case where they were understaffed and maybe our server was the only one doing multiple jobs, but the amount of time between receiving the menu, taking our orders, the food arriving, getting our check at the end, and having our card actually picked up so we could pay just all took way way waaaaay too long.
Our server was just fine and I have no complaints about him specifically. The two stars is because the overall service was nonexistent besides this one employee. (There was also a cell phone alarm near the front desk going off every 5-10 minutes that was very loud and annoying.)
It really felt more like a truck stop than a classy restaurant, which is a stark contrast to my first time eating here. I was excited to treat my friends and it was a really, really disappointing sit-down experience for all of us.
Unfortunately, I probably won't be coming back because the overall experience was not worth the $60 I paid. I wish we had walked out at the very beginning when we were wondering if we had been forgotten about. There's cheaper food and better service elsewhere.
Awesome gluten-free options! I have a friend with severe celiac disease and she can't eat gluten, or even dine anywhere where gluten might cross-contaminate other foods. This is one of the few restaurants that has proven to be extremely diligent with their gluten protocols, and I love that we have somewhere to go that we can both enjoy! The dishes can be a little pricey, but the quality of the food is way higher than what you'd find at competing restaurants for the same price. And the wait staff is exceptional!
The orange chicken is an absolute life-changer. Also, I didn't know it was possible for ham-fried rice to be this good....
Read moreWe have been coming to Joy Luck in Bountiful since they opened 20+ years ago and our experience on Sunday made me very sad because we were celebrating a birthday and it wasn't what it usually is. The manager/host was very kind and thanked us for coming a couple of times. The service and the food was not up their usual good standards. Our server clearly didn't want to be there with her attitude, she took our basic order of 5 meat dishes and a noodle dish, never asked if we wanted the dinner combo, just did everything a la cart and left. She brought it drinks and the appetizer. 5 meals came out and 1 didn't. We were only given 1 bowl of rice for the entire table to share. We thought she would come back with another but she didn't. We waited nearly 20 minutes when she came back around and let her know we were missing a meal and the server said it was an item that I didn't order and told her what it was. Another 15 minutes and it was brought out when everyone was almost done eating. Only 2 drinks on the whole table were refilled. She dropped off the check and didn't come back until after the manager had picked up the bill and my credit card and brought to-go boxes. The orange chicken didn't have anything but a citrus flavor, no spice at all and the teriyaki chicken was swimming in sauce and sesame seeds. It was just not the quality of the meal or service we are used to. Hopefully next time...
Read moreI wanted to post on our recent visit to Joy Luck. I've been coming here for years. This particular visit was definitely 2 stars. The service and food at the Sandy location are much better.
We had lunch with a small group. The waiter accepted our Wasatch Savings card for a BOGO but would only do it with 2 entrees. Sandy location always allows us to use the Wasatch Savings card twice.
While waiting for food our daughter spilled her drink. I had to flag down a different waiter just to get it taken care of. The waiter then forgot to replace the water. We had to ask him. He also forgot to give us utensils. Luckily, he remembered to ask us "you need anything else?" That when I said, yeah some forks would be great.
We ordered 3 different chicken entrees. Tangerine, General Tsao, and Sweet and Sour chicken. We couldn't figure out which one was which. They tasted pretty much all the same. It was very good food.
We had to repeatedly ask for extra rice. We even requested extra but the waiter would only bring out 1 small bowl. Well, we would finish it up and ask for more.
Just wasn't the best experience we have ever had. Which is not typical of Joy Luck. Maybe it is just...
