A surprisingly unique experience to be had in the downtown Milwaukee area. AXE is a creative take on the ubiquitous tavern/bar scene in Wisconsin in that axe-throwing is the main activity! I say axe-throwing, but for those that are a little intimidated, it's actually more like hatchet-throwing. Alcohol + axe throwing = fun in my book. First of all, let's talk about the safety concerns....the way the owners have set up the activity is very safe. There are multiple lanes for throwing that are all divided from each other by wood and welded wire fencing. There's simply no way anyone in an adjacent lane can hit someone in the next lane over. In addition, they provide a thorough safety briefing and training before you start and they have attendants present the entire time to make sure everyone is acting appropriately. Successful throwing is actually surprisingly simple once you get the hang of it, but hitting your intended mark takes some focus and practice. I promise you'll enjoy the time spent trying. With respect to the rest of the premises, the space is large and can handle large groups provided you call in advance to reserve time. The full service bar is simple and uncomplicated and fits in well with the rustic theme used throughout the building. The end result is that the focus is really on the interaction with your party and the bar itself is secondary. That's a nice change from the usual layout found. Obviously, when multiple people are throwing axes it can be a little loud so don't expect to have quiet conversations in this place. Go here to try something new and blow off a little steam and you'll leave having had a good time. And if you have trouble getting your axe to stick, don't get frustrated...ask for help and plan to come back for redemption next week!
