Just had the worst experience here which is crazy because it was a spot I usually frequent due to them have gluten free items (I have celiacs). There were just a lot of micro issues that added up. First I walked in by myself and was told I could sit anywhere and I chose a booth. Waitress walked up, never greeted me and sat everything (water, menus, silverware) on the opposite side of the table from where I was sitting, okay that's fine, not too worried just moved it closer to me, then just walked away without greeting or really even asking if she could get me anything else. Not a word. Okay fine I get bad days. I then sat for 15 minutes before I had to eventually ask another waitress to take my order. I was very kind, smiley and tactful the entire time so I'm just really confused, She literally rolled her eyes and said okay, so I proceeded to order and I warned her I had celiacs and just wanted to make sure if she could let the kitchen know it's for a gluten allergy and to make sure the bread it gluten free (again being very kind). She acted like I told her to bite my toenails off?? I then get my order 20 minutes later and it's super cold and not to mention I found not one, not two, not even three but four strands of hair all over my plate. AND it was NOT gluten free bread! | was starving and unfortunately didn't notice till I took a bite and looked (plus when I had my gluten symptoms the next day from it). This is my second time getting glutened by them, my fault for thinking it would be different this time. Not to mention, all the servers were standing around talking the entire time and nobody came to check on me or anything at all. The menu revamp is different and they took off a few items that I loved. So I don't know. I just took the check and left. It was just the poorest service i've ever experienced since being in Milwaukee, I will not be coming here again. NOT CELIAC OR GLUTEN SENSITIVE SAFE I don't normally write bad reviews but I need to come on here for my fellow celiacs and gluten...
Read moreI really wanted to be a fan of this place. I always seem to be hearing about this place, so I expected better. My parents were in town visiting, and my dad had seen the place on Dinners, Drive-is and Dives and wanted to try some of the food he saw there. We decided to drop in for lunch on a Saturday to see what they are all about. We were disappointed to find that they only serve the breakfast menu until 3:00pm, so the stuff my dad wanted to try wasn't even available for us. We had already had breakfast, and the lunch options were very sparse on their breakfast menu. We decided to stay anyway, since we had already waited 45 minutes for our table. Speaking of, there is no decent waiting space and we were forced to stand out in the cold the entire time.
Once we sat down we were able to enjoy the cool Milwaukee divey-chic-urban dinner aesthetics. We found a couple of dishes that sounded good and ordered. The coffee was good, sourced from Anodyne, tho they do not have decaff, you have to order a decaff Americano and you don't get any refills, sorry mom.
The food was burnt and bland. Two of us got the spinach and artichoke something or other sandwich that ended up being kind of burnt and not as flavorful as they had hoped. The rest of us had the pulled chicken and jam sandwich, which the menu made it sound like it would be a hot sandwich. It was cold, so kind of unexpected and wasn't what we were hoping for. Quite flavorless and don't call something a "pulled" meat sandwich unless you are actually slow cooking the meat, it was obvious from the tough chicken that this was not the case.
The service was decent, but between the long wait in the cold and the disappointing meal, I can't justify anything more than 3 stars...
Read moreAs a person in the Hospitality industry I must say that the food is very delicious. Unfortunately, my last visit to Comet Cafe left me speechless by what the GM Bobby asked upon leaving. On Jan 29, 2024, I ordered takeout from Comet Cafe. I have dined in and also have taken out so this is not my 1st time patronizing the restaurant. I called ahead to inform the restaurant that the to-go portions sometimes are not equivalent to the portions one would receive as dining in and I usually order the same entree. After receiving the order that I paid for the GM Bobby ran out to my car and asked for a tip. Now in the Hospitality business and especially a to-go order, I'm sure tips are not required. I mentioned to Bobby my meal was around $18.00 I gave them a $20.00 bill and I did not ask for any change in return. Bobby said I was not required to leave a tip but he was asking because he was simply looking out for his team. I felt speechless because in a way that was kinda like my last cash until Friday and the fact that I spent it on a meal at Comet Cafe should speak volumes but isn't his business to know I spent my last. I felt somewhat harassed by the gesture of leaving a tip. Please help me understand why this was a necessary action from the GM. It's very rude to ask for a tip in any circumstance. I have dined in and have tipped more than 18% on a $40.00 bill before but for a takeout order that? I'm reluctant to dine or order in again. I hope this is not common managerial behavior and I hope Bobby does not ask other patrons for tips because that is bad Hospitality etiquette. I am an Afro-female who really like the food and appreciates the accommodations for my diet but the GM may need more training in...
