Welcome to Samurai Jack's Discount Sushi™, the cut-rate sushi joint that's serving bottom quality food, just like the kind you've had at Ye Olde hole-in-the-wall in the armpit of the state. Only, unlike the hole-in-the-wall place, Yuki jacks up their prices 15%-20% of what you'd expect to pay for this quality. This jump in pricing is no doubt justified due to the interior being that imposing, modern-minimilistic chic that panders to all of the local, upwardly-mobile Bay View muckity mucks. The interior feels awkwardly surgical/medical, like I'm inside of a recently flipped house's bathroom.
The place disrespects its ingredients, mistreats their staff, and overcharges for their food. I ate dinner at Yuki last night as a sort of expedient last ditch effort after Hungry Sumo pulled their usual nonsense of telling me, the solo diner, that it would be a 50-minute wait while they're flipping two-tops right in front of my face. To my dismay, the moment I sat down and ordered sake at Yuki, I heard a microwave running, and looked up and saw that the bartendress was nuking my carafe! They take the pre-marked fliptop bottles of cold sake from their lowboys, dispense it into a carafe, and let Chef Mic do the heavy lifting. The moment I received my miso, it was apparent that it too was microwaved.
The sushi here sucks. While you get a generous portion of the seafood, it rests on a racketball-sized amount of rice. The surf clams were completely bland. The tobiko (flying fish roe) nigiri was listed on the menu as being two pieces per order, but I only received one per order. After I inquired, the bartendress asked the sushi "chef" about this discrepancy, that I only received half of my order, he visibly yelled at her. The chef noticed I witnessed the entire event, so he hastily cobbled together a baseball-sized wad of rice and slapped a smelly piece of salmon atop it before serving it to me to apologize for the menu mixup.
Speaking of the menus, they are disgusting. The paper menus are crumpled, grease-stained, and have particles of food dried to them.
When I asked the bartendress about doing a shot with me, she had to ask permission from the lady owner, who told her that she'd have to wait until after her shift to drink it. The bartendress offered one of their "signature" sake shots, which is a total crock because it was just a bottle of coconut sake (which was very revoluting tasting). Because the bottle was near empty, she had to talk to Mr. Sushi Chef again so he could drop everything he was doing to unlock a supply closet door to the right of the bar to fetch another bottle of this swill.
Sushi Yuki is terrible. It's overpriced for what it is. The restuarant is being run by cynical amateurs who respect nothing about the dining experience. I will not be making a return visit, and...
Read moreThis is my favorite place to eat out in Milwaukee. There is something so welcoming and warm about the atmosphere and I feel like I’m coming to a second home every time we’re greeted by all the staff. My favorite waitress is Sae, who always remembers our orders and little details about past encounters and has incredible ability to read my mind. I credit her to suggesting my order for the first time—the super volcano roll—to which I return time and time again. She is always smiling, friendly, and easy going and so hard working (as she is one semester away from being a nurse yet still works full time as a waitress!). The owner can often be seen coming around asking about guests experience and I also think she is very sweet and most attentive. At Sushi Yuki each meal starts with a complimentary salad, which has no right being as delicious as it is. Like I mentioned before, I always get the super volcano roll, which of course is delicious. My partner and I have switched through appetizers and have found only one thing we didn’t love (the spicy edamame but that was our fault). The udon noodles are great as well. Most of the wait staff are very knowledgeable about the menu and should be able to suggest a meal that will be personalized to your taste. We always finalize the meal with mochi. I will say from the music to the fresh food and the attentive staff and the reasonable prices I absolutely love this place and hope...
Read moreWe decided to try Sushi Yuki instead of our usual standby just for the sake of a new experience. I'm a little surprised at the super high Google rating. The space is beautiful. The service was absolutely perfect - no complaints there. The food - underwhelming. There is a lot of "krab" in the rolls - imitation crab which is fine, call it what it is...but the "krab" label is odd in a higher end restaurant. Many of the rolls are cooked (deep fried, grilled etc), again...fine, this appeals to a certain customer but cuts down on options if you have raw preferences - just letting others know. Many of the special rolls are the California rolls with extra stuff on top...this is not what I consider a special roll, it seems like a cost cutting move for rolls that are higher priced. Rolls just look kind of messy and amateur. There's also a fair amount of tilapia on the roll menus which does not tend to be traditionally common AND is a known parasite risk if not prepared correctly so know your risks. Our rolls, including the volcano roll which is supposed to be spicy and was pretty unremarkable if not bland. Finally, the single vegetarian roll, the sweet potato roll which my daughter gets all the time at other restaurants, was crunchy and not fully cooked. I don't see us visiting again as it's just not the quality of flavor for the price. Do yourself a favor and visit the other absolutely wonderful Bay View sushi...
