I grew up in the Longfellow neighborhood but now live in Canada. Came here because I had eaten here before and liked it. I remember that the vibe was very hipster, but I can ignore that. Well tonight my mom and I came in for dinner. First thing we notice is that it's really loud inside. Next, we were presented with the QR code to scan so we could see the menu. Weird, but ok. It was a clunky process that my poor mother could not understand. Look, people. I've read the reviews, and 80% of them mention not liking the ordering system. Take the hint, Blue Door! Nobody likes this system and I found it very alienating. Apparently if you're not in your 20s, they don't want you there. At some point during our struggle to order, my mom realized that they only serve beer, wine, and soft drinks. She was in from out of town too, and just wanted a Margarita. We were so disappointed that we almost left. Finally a server noticed our distress and came over. My mom expressed her disappointment about not being able to get her preferred drink. The server was not at all interested. So my mom ordered a glass of wine, even though she's not a wine drinker. It was your average pinot grigio, about 6 ounces. FOR $10. WTH? The server then explained the ordering process poorly, at almost inaudibly low volume, and with a very snooty attitude. Our food did arrive very quickly after we finally ordered, which was good. Mom got the grilled cheese and tater tots. I think she liked her sandwich, and the tater tot portion was huge. I got a house salad and Sweet Chili Lime Nugs. The house salad was just as described, a typical Minnesota dinner salad. It's what I was in the mood for, so it was good. The nugs were good too. The tater tots were great. We asked if we could pay cash, and the server said yes, but I caught her giving us the hairy eyeball. So, overall, although the food was good enough, the "service" was atrocious and the atmosphere felt very exclusive and not welcoming. We never tip less than 20%, but this time we could only justify leaving 15%. I doubt anybody from The Blue Door ever reads these reviews, so I'm sure my 2 cents won't make a difference. But hopefully someone reading this while looking for spot to have dinner will read it, and take our experience into consideration when...
Read moreI wanted to really like this restaurant because of all of the fantastic reviews and because their menu sounded so delicious and promising, however I just placed an order for their nugs and their totchos through postmates and I am severely disappointed and a little repulsed if I'm honest. The only good thing I guess I can say is that the delivery was pretty fast, I didn't have to wait long at all however that is where any praise from me ends. The order of totchos I received seem thrown together haphazardly and despite getting to me quickly, it was a cold and soggy mess. My first fork full i pulled up an enormous piece of pork fat..as i was trying to fork it out the piece just kept revealing itself to be bigger and bigger and there were several similarly large pieces as well as some smaller but just as fatty ones throughout the dish. I added pictures so you can see for yourself. I mean these chunks of fat were ridiculously huge. I honestly don't think that I got any pulled pork at all, just fat. What chef or cook pulls a giant strip of just fat and throws it on a dish thinking that it would be okay dbd not completely appalling. I tried taking a couple bites of the totchos but after that first fork full in particular i had completely lost my appetite. Its like i had to choose between a soggy, wet and cold forkful of totchos or a forkful of giant, squishy, gelatin-y chunks and stripes of fat. Ughh I'm making myself sick again just by recalling the dish. I can't tell you about the nugs and whether they were good or not. After the fatty totchos, my stomache was so upset and i was so replused, that I just couldn't fathom trying to eat anything else, especially coming from this restaurant. I would not in a million years recommend their food and I'll never be ordering from here again. You wouldn't catch me trying their food again even if you paid me. I really regret giving them my $40 and to say I'm disappointed would be a complete understatement. I'm...
Read moreThis is an okay spot. You can tell that it's pretty popular as there were lots of young vibrant people there when I went. I waited about 15 mins to be seated. The host was nice and we were offered a drink menu while waiting, so that was nice. The one thing that I didn't like about this place and the main reason for the 3 star rating, is their food ordering system. You have to use your smartphone to scan a QR code to access their menu and order food. The idea of that is cool and kind of a smart business move on THIER part, but as a professional diner and someone who appreciates the "old school" or traditional dining experience, I didn't like that at all. It feels as though that idea benefits them way more than the diners. Although the staff were very friendly, it felt as though they wanted nothing to do with us. And because this way of ordering is newer, my BFF and I sat at our table for like 15 mins trying to figure it all out. Once we did, our food/drinks came at different times and they were being served by random staff. Because of this, I think this restaurant limits itself to a specific type of crowd. If my parents wanted to dine there they couldn't bc of their ordering system. If my phone was dead, I can't go there bc of their ordering system, if my camera didn't work I can't go there bc of their ordering system, if my phone was not a phone that scanned QR codes, guess what? I can't go there, bc of their ordering system. 🤷🏾♀️ I can see that they've clearly made a statement without making a statement. "Do not come here if you do not know how to use a smartphone and/or expect a traditional dining experience, because we're not that." I think it would be better if, they could perhaps add a few tables where there are ATCUAL servers who take orders. Other than that, the food was good, the place was clean, and there were lots of beers to choose from! I also liked the vibe of the restaurant, it was a perfect spot [for my BFF and I] to talk, chill, and...
