Went in on a Monday around 11am to grab some burritos and was met by a barista with a MAJOR ATTITUDE PROBLEM. I've had her serve me before and I always feel like she's about ready to start a fight with me, like I'm in trouble for something. The short gal with dark hair and all kinds of jewelry. The last person who recently gave a one-star review mentioned the 'unfriendly stare' if you try to talk to some of the baristas and I've experienced that, too. It's not even so much an attitude problem as it is aggression, be it passive or direct, but it feels more direct. Geez, if you don't like your job, do something else. I've been in this neighborhood for over 20 years and it really puts me off that a new crew of people within the last few years can take over what used to be a friendly neighborhood spot w/out any regard for the community and locals that have kept this place afloat for so long. The 2 bags of chips I got—one was completely full and the other was hardly filled up—blatant carelessness. I'll keep coming here but maybe not as much, this place needs to hire some new faces. No need to reply with an insincere comment saying how you apologize for this & that because if you really cared, you'd do something about it. So much for feeling like this a welcoming place because I don't feel welcome whenever I come in here at all. I'd like to give more stars because the food...
Read moreJust had the weirdest experience at May Day. I get pizza there all the time. It usually comes out around 10 am ish. Today, I asked about pizza stacked on plates behind a panel, (it’s usually in a pan). I asked if it was made today, since it didn’t look like it. The dude, mumbled that he didn’t know, then proceeded to pat it with a spatula, and move it around, kind of playing with it until it fell off of the plate. He seemed high af. He showed no affect about what had just happened. The other employee threw it away. The guy continued to act very strangely, as if very high; no actual engagement with me. He also asked me to sign a receipt for my Apple Pay, (no eye contact), which doesn’t require a signature. It’s basically for customers to add a tip, for counter service(?). I told him I didn’t need to sign, and he mumbled something with that same weird affect. WTH?
Another thing. When you pay with Apple Pay, you don’t need to sign, so they’re just giving you a slip of paper receipt to add a tip. If I want to add a tip I’ll use the tip jar or ask to do so. Most baristas don’t hand the tip ask receipt to you anymore. The employee today, not the stoned guy, told me she needed it back even with no tip. That’s false. The sale is already electronically recorded. That’s my receipt. Please get this policy straight. We don’t have to...
Read moreThis morning I visited May Day right when it opened.
I ordered something by describing what it was made of instead of by name (espresso in a black coffee with sugar free simple syrup).
For some reason instead of responding, "Ok, we call that a red-eye," which would actually have been informative for me, the barista said, "So...a red-eye?" I don't buy a lot of coffee, or remember the names of things very well (I'm neurologically atypical and this is not my strong suit), but at other restaurants and cafes they don't usually make me feel stupid for it.
I also inquired whether the muffins were vegan, and the same barista said, "I don't know," and ten seconds passed in silence before I asked if she may be able to check, so she sighed and replied, "...I guess," and asked someone.
It turns out they're not, and according to her at this hour there were no other vegan options on the menu (apparently there's pizza later). It seems strange to advertise being vegan, but who knows, by this point I felt so unwelcome, like such an impediment to whatever a "normal" customer would be in this cafe that i just wanted to get my stuff and leave.
The coffee was not great, but I didn't have it there as planned (because of above) so it's more difficult to judge having carried it for 20 minutes...
