We were first time guest at the Hilton Sandestin. We had reservations on a Tuesday night 7:45pm, we arrived at the restaurant at 7:15 and were told we could not be seated early. We said okay and went to the other restaurant at the hotel because our kids couldn’t wait to eat.
The following night, we made an earlier reservation. We were seated and our waiter introduced himself. He seemed overwhelmed and flustered. He took my white napkin from me and said he would be back with a black napkin (I was wearing all black) but he never came back.
We started off with the Caesar salad, our waiter made the salad behind us. I told my husband “if that salad is for us we should ask him not to put too much cheese”. My husband turned around as the waiter was throwing handfuls of cheese in the salad and said “I think that salad is for the table next to us”. He thought this because the waiter was making the salad in-front of the other table. Sure enough, the salad was for us. Completely covered in cheese. What’s the point of rolling out a whole salad cart and making a fresh salad for the table if the table doesn’t know it’s for them? The salad was awful by the way, completely drenched in cheese and dressings.
My husband ordered the New York strip and I ordered the steak Diane. We both asked for the steaks to be cooked Medium-Well, it arrived very rare. We showed the waiter our rare steaks and asked for it to be cooked a little more. He took our steaks back to cook them more and returned them to our table. They were still below medium-well but more edible. With our kids getting antsy, we didn’t want to ask for it to be cooked a third time. Unfortunately my steak had returned without any Diane sauce. It was just a plain steak. I found it really odd that our waiter would go through all the trouble to make this sauce live “table side” (the table behind us table’s side) just to serve it to me with no sauce. I had never tried a Steak Diane, I was really looking forward to it and was disappointed to not receive what I had ordered at all.
For our children, our waiter suggested the Macaroni and Cheese. We asked some questions about it , decided that would be too cheesy for them. He said he would put in an order for just plain boiled macaroni with butter sauce and assured us it was not a problem. We never received this plain macaroni. We were served a very overly cheesy macaroni and cheese to which no one liked. I understand that this is not a kid friendly restaurant but the boiled macaroni was a suggestion by our waiter. We ended up making them a cup of ramen noodles in our hotel room after “dinner”.
I myself waited tables when I was in school, I know that some nights are good nights and some nights are bad nights. I let the experience go and enjoyed the rest of our vacation. To be honest, the steak at the casual Sandcastle restaurant upstairs was a million times better than the steak here. We ended up dining at that restaurant multiple times. I figured this was just a hyped up vacation hotel restaurant that we got suckered in to, but then I looked it up online out of curiosity.
“Seagar’s Prime Steaks & Seafood is consistantly recognized as one of the best restaurants in Northwest Florida. The only AAA Four Diamond steakhouse in the Destin-area, our dining experience has been recognized as one of the top five steakhouses in Florida and in the top 10 restaurants in Destin.” *^(consistently spelled wrong by the way)
Nope. We didn’t have this dining experience AT ALL.
After reading more online about this restaurant, I asked my husband how much the bill was. He told me it was $300 after tip. For a salad, 2 undercooked steaks (one steak missing its essence), a side of macaroni and cheese, and a side of mashed potatoes I was shocked. I do not feel that the price of our meal reflected the quality of our food and service. This was a vacation let down for sure.
I have omitted many details of my experience due to the cut off length...
Read moreMy husband and I dined here on 27th October. It was his birthday and i just have to make it special. Googled for a fancy fine dining and google recommended Seagar's. Made reservation and waited for the day to arrive. So the reason for 5 stars was mainly for the service we received from the moment we walked into the restaurant until we left. I told the lady that called me confirming our reservation that it was my husband's birthday after she said "so we are celebrating a birthday". So we arrived at 530pm and was greeted by a man at the reception and he wished my husband a happy birthday and then a lady showed up and also did the same. It was cool and I loved that part however my husband didn't like that given the fact that he loves low key and quiet birthday. So we were brought to our table and I could only remember the name of the lady who served us - Jasmine, sorry couldn't remember the guy's name. They were polite and very professional, the only thing i wish was they would have spoken louder. The piano played was loud (it was beautiful by the way ) and for someone with hearing issue, that was a problem. Nonetheless all went well and we decided to skip appetizer since there were only 2 of us and were saving space in our belly. We decided to try something from the seafood section and also steak. We ordered steam king crab legs, sauteed mushrooms, truffle fries ( which looked more like mini string fries) and bone in ribeye with scallops. So let's talk about the food now. I love salty food but not when it is too salty. The steak was perfect, the saltiness and the way it was grilled was just perfect however the scallops was pretty salty. We asked for it to be medium well since I am not a fan of steak to be too red in the middle, the sauteed mushrooms was okay according to my husband and I quote when I asked him how was it? " I've had better". The king crab legs was my husband's favorite but not so much mine as in my opinion it was quite salty. Don't get me wrong, it was amazing and my husband's said the KCL was by far the best he had tasted but I wished they had ease down on the salt (not a problem for my husband though). The truffle fries was not the best in my opinion, it doesn't taste like truffle fries at all, it was like i said before mini shoe string fries and it was just impossible to even try to eat it with a fork. Maybe it was meant to be eaten by hand but trust me I've tried that too. I wish they could do more research on truffle fries. We've had the best truffle fries at Earl's in Dadeland mall in Miami. Then the last one was the dessert - since it was my husband birthday we were told by the guy who spoke to us when we were first seated that we will getting chocolate soufflé and not sure if he was supposed to give that information out but my husband turned that down which saddened me a little but since it was his special day i let it go... :). So we went with créme brûlèe and that was the best I've tasted so far in Florida that i know of. So no regrets on not taking the chocolate soufflé. I am very sure that was a very nice gesture but hands down to the dessert we ordered. So the bill came up to USD 180 + tax but hey it was pretty worth it and it wasn't a problem at all. Would we dine here again? maybe for special occasion but i love to try different places. So try it and i know everyone has/ have different opinions and taste but this is solely mine and mine only. The place gets pretty busy as the night goes on. Great ambiance and awesome...
Read moreI've been going back and forth on writing this review, honestly. I chose Seagar's for my 30th birthday celebration and was disappointed with my service. Side note: I used to be a secret shopper for Ruth Chris, Fleming's and Tommy Bahamas.. so I am very observant.
Originally I invited 30+ friends to come (my mother and grandmother, couples, older, younger, etc.) But unfortunately it was just me, two other beautiful young ladies and one older man. I believe the perception of who showed up, may have thrown of how the service should have been. Perhaps the staff was thinking 'these girls are obviously trying to get a free meal from this old guy' instead of catering to the special occasion itself. When I called and made the reservation, the hostess asked if we were celebrating a special occasion, I replied and said that it's for my 30th birthday. She says "Wow! That's a big one! I'll write that down in the reservation." But absolutely no one asked who's birthday it was when we arrived- hostess, waitress or management. The closest was when management introduced himself. He said "Are we celebrating? Would you like some champagne?" All three ladies ordered cocktails along with a bottle of champagne. When management came around to refill the champagne, everyone's glass was topped off by mine (the girl's glass next to mine was 3/4 full and mine was at the halfway point. When he didn't top mine off, we both looked at each other in confusion 'why not?'). Needless to say, I made sure my glass was empty for the next round. They took my champagne glass away when the appetizers arrived. I still had my St Germain 85 at the time, but I finished that before the entrees arrived where it was then topped off with champagne. All of the ladies ordered medium rare filets and the one man ordered his rare. Multiple people came to drop the food at the same time. The boy came to drop the steak in front of the older man and said 'medium rare filet' and the man says 'mine is rare'. The boy says 'well, uhh, I think it's rare.. pretty sure..' So we all cut down the center and I got the rare steak. I offered the man just to simply switch steaks with me, but his attitude changed and he made a huge deal about it to management (unnecessary. I apologize for his behavior towards your staff. It was a simple mistake). The man ordered a baked potato, but he sends it away until his new steak arrives. When the potato came back, it was barely warm enough to melt the butter. I took a bite to verify and I believe it was the original potato instead of a fresh one. We sent it back. So, we're getting to the end of dinner and they didn't ask if the birthday person wanted dessert, management offered a complimentary dessert for the trouble with the steak instead. When the bill arrived, we were digging in our purses to pay with multiple cards, but they were ready to get us out of there and charged the full amount one one of the girl's cards for $640 instead of waiting for the rest. The man had some of cash and gave the girl the most of the money back, and me and the third girl left $200 for the tip. We all had the cash for the dinner. We did not assume the man was paying for anything. I've attached a photo of us so everyone can understand why the focus may not have been on the right person. Overall, staff was very nice. Food was great. But I did not feel particularly catered to or felt special dining with you as I...
