Stopped by here with my fiance on a day out to the area. It was a random choice based on it being one of the nearest restaurants when we searched google maps.
Upon arrival we were not met by anyone, the place was practically empty, and there was no indication if we were to seat ourselves or be seated. We approached the bar area and were advised we were to sit ourselves, take a menu, choose what we want and then return to place our order. The menu wasn't impressive, various bits of paper with order numbers written on them.
After choosing our seats and deciding on a small pizza, we went to the order area. The attitude of the staff was not great, I felt like a bit of a nuisance to them rather than a paying customer. We ordered our pizza and then had to advise we also wanted 2 drinks. The staff member took my payment on card and also waved the tip jar in my direction to highlight it was there.
After ordering and paying we returned to seats. We waited about 15 minutes and then our order number was called for us to go all the way to the other side of the restaurant to collect our drinks - 2 large soft drinks. No one was there to greet us, we just picked them up and returned to our chairs. Another 15-20 minutes went by and then again our number was called for our pizza.
The pizza came on a round metal tray, and was cut into 12 square slices. We weren't given plates, cutlery or napkins so had to get all of these things ourselves.
To be fair, the pizza was good but it didn't taste any better or worse than a frozen pizza for a couple dollars. We only got plain cheese so there wasn't a lot to expect, but I feel it should have been made a lot quicker than 30 minutes. Perhaps they need to wait for the oven to heat up before sticking a frozen pizza in(!)
Apparently they do have bus boys, so there was no need for us to return our stuff, but we also had go go ask about that as we didn't want to just walk out.
Needless to say, I didn't leave a tip. As a British person I don't agree with the tipping culture anyway, but I do tip 20% or more in the US everywhere that we get table service because the servers are always very good. No one tips in McDonald's, and the service here was no different - we had to get all our own stuff and place the order at the bar area.
I would not recommend this restaurant and won't be visiting again. I'm only giving 2 stars because the food was reasonable, but the service and cost was not. We paid $20 for a small pizza with 2 soft drinks, I feel this was quite excessive for what it was. The atmosphere was okay, quite pleasant and warm, TVs were on with sports and news, but it didn't feel like a welcoming place. That may change in the evenings, but we visited at lunch time and I'd expect more.
I would recommend they remove the tip jar, train the staff to be better at customer service, provide table service like most other restaurants, and re-evaluate their pricing structure.
Overall disappointing and I at least hope the owners read these reviews and take any constructive...
Read moreI'm updating my previous 5 star review. Barnabys on Grape Rd has been my favorite pizza in the area for about 30 years, until now. Because of Covid-19 restaurants have been closed in Indiana except for carry out. With restrictions, resturants have now been able to seat customers. I'm not ready to be inside with strangers, many who doubt that COVID-19 even exists and prefer to get their info from friends rather than scientists. So for now I will continue eat at home or get my food to go from restaurants who seem to be doing their best to keep their customers, employees and food safe. Barnaby's doesn't seem to be doing any of this. I called in my pizza tonight to pick up. I arrived on the time they told me. Once I entered it was a nightmare for someone who's concerned about theirs and their families health. There was a line with approximately 15 people snaking though half of the resturant. Half of those in line were not wearing masks and were not concerned with social distancing. To make it worse people existing and entering the restaurant were forced to squeeze past those in line. While standing in line 15-20 minutes I saw that most of those seated didn't have masks but how can anyone eat while wearing a mask? I saw that most of the employees were wearing a mask except for two. A woman employee was wearing hers on her chin, a short, stocky man who Ives always assumed was the manager wasn't wearing a mask at all. To make it worse he was moving through the crowd of close working employees making pizzas and the group of employees running the register. He made it obvious to me that he wasn't concerned at all about his employees or his customers health. If he so obviously feels this way, what other health standards is he ignoring that can't be seen while standing in line? I'm just one loyal customer and I probably won't make a difference but I won't be back until I hear everyone is following basic hygiene rules during this virus and they offer curb side pick up. I hope both...
Read moreWent to Barnaby's last night to pick up two pizza's. Had two separate orders (one for ourselves and one for our son & daugher-in-law to drop off at their house) but called them in together. Asked and was told by the order taker that I did not need to call each order in individually to utilize the My Deals Michiana coupons which I had purchased. I could have and would have used both our name and cell # on one order, and my son and his cell number on the other.
Arrived and the Barnaby manager would not honor either coupon. I told him that I had called the order in and confirmed with the order taker the above, and was told that it was ok. Manager told me "tough" and that I needed to read the coupon detail. I pointed out that the instructions on the coupon under Terms are "Limit one voucher per order. Cannot be combined with any other offers." No other instructions or constraints are indicated.
He then said that if he accepted both coupons they would only be paid for one that night, but could not process the second coupon until the next day. The lady at the counter then wrote "void" on the bottom of the first coupon.
I told the Barnaby manager that I did not want the pizza's and he said that he did not care. I asked for my coupons back and the lady at the counter gave them to me. I left and we purchased pizza at another vendor.
I intend to contact My Deals Michiana tomorrow as that is where I purchased the coupons from, and ask for a refund for the remaining coupons.
Terrible customer service. Manager choose not to honor what his order taker had said saying that she was young and did not follow the Barnaby procedure. Had I called both orders individually they would have accepted. Also really don't understand why they voided my coupon when they would not accept it.
Will not be back and intend to contact My Deals Michiana to register...
