Maghees Grill On the Hill — Restaurant in Mobile

I HAVE NEVER HAD AN EXPERIENCE LIKE THIS IN MY LIFE! I ate lunch at Maghees Grill On the Hill when I was looking at houses/planning for my move to Mobile. I thought it was a GREAT little neighborhood restaurant that I’d like to frequent often. Food was good, everyone seemed to know each other. After I bought my house and moved to Mobile, I decided to have dinner there. Again, thought “this is going to be a great place to eat on a regular basis.” I went on a Thursday night with a friend. We both ordered salads, an appetizer, and entrees. I wasn’t timing it but I believe it was an hour before our salads arrived. My friend and I were patient because we know things happen. I figured, once we got our salads, things would go more smoothly. I was wrong. After we finished our salads, we waited about 10 minutes for our appetizer. After we finished our appetizer, we waited quite some time for our entrees. Finally, my friend POLITELY asked the server what was going on. It was a polite, quiet conversation. The server apologized for the long wait and advised our food would be out shortly. We continued to wait. Then, the cook came out with our food. I was later told his name was Bobby. When he got to our table, he started YELLING at us, accusing us of yelling at the server. He was acting CRAZY. We immediately got up and headed for the door. Our server came to us and I asked to speak with her outside. She and another server stepped outside and apologized profusely. I asked her if she thought we had yelled at her and advised that was not our intention. She said we absolutely did not yell at her, we simply asked what was going on with our food and she relayed that to the cook. She was in tears. She kept apologizing for how the cook treated us and actually gave me a hug. I told her she was not to blame and that delays happen. I told her the only unacceptable thing was the cook yelling at us. Also, he yelled so loud, other patrons heard. It was embarrassing. She told us the owner/manager’s name was Meaghan. I called to speak with Meaghan SEVERAL times over the last few weeks. Left my name and number but she never returned my call. It is clear that the owner does not care how her customers are treated. It’s a shame. I was looking forward to going there often. Yelling at customers, owner unconcerned....

Conflicted here, literally stumbled on this place while on a golf trip. We rolled in with 16 guys, place probably seats 24-30. It was a weeknight, so needless to say, we sort of surprised them. Staff were super gracious and attentive even though we swamped them. A steady stream of local couples came in and out, clearly a loyal following and clientele, but let’s get to it, the food was perfect. Blacked shrimp, ahi nachos, grouper, steak burger, and all the fixings were just stellar.

Sometimes, when you are traveling, you want to find that local spot, not a chain, not the same bar food you can get anywhere, and not a Michelin star spot either, Maghees is that spot. Friendly people, great food, and the feeling you got to taste and experience what the local population has available on the regular.

Will probably never be back, but we’ll talk about the good time and the good meal we had there for years. If you’re in Mobile, you should 100% go to Maghees. You’ll be...

Its hard not to do a 4 star review but at the end of the day its all about the truth! Stopped by to try a new place 2 ladys working extremely busy time really needed 1 or 2 people more. I ordered the lunch special burger drink and potato salad! Potato salad was made with Dijon mustard wasn't very good and it was a really small amount for the money like one scoop maybe 3 bites. Burger was cooked to perfection and it was good. My problem is I spent 19 dollars plus tip for a average lunch that should cost 10 to 12 dollars max! Customers ordered chips and salsa next to me and they used store bought chips and salsa when customers are paying premium prices make the stuff homeaid!
