Dessert European Bakery — Restaurant in Modesto

I really wanted to like this place because they have a good selection of desserts.

We initially inquired about having them make our wedding cake. I reached out via email (seems to be their preferred method of contact) and sent over the picture attached along with the date and venue of our wedding. I also inquired about a cake-tasting and what the process would be for that. They responded back the same day (we love a quick turnaround) -- asking for how many servings the cake would need to be & informed me that it is a $60 charge for a cake tasting (must be scheduled with a 4-day notice) - you get to choose up to 6 flavors. The rough estimate they gave me for 80 servings was $505 which is on the higher end of the rest of my inquiries at other bakeries, but in the saying - "you get what you pay for" - I wasn't going to go cheap for my wedding cake so after a little back & forth, we scheduled a cake tasting for a weekday morning.

She said I could choose 6 cakes & 6 fillings from a list she emailed - this was a picture of a handwritten list on a notepad so I think it isn't anything set in stone & could change depending on different variables. I am only assuming since they didn't have a formal list on their website. I've attached the list provided for the cakes and fillings.

We decided on the following combinations: Red Velvet cake with Cream Cheese filling (without choc chips) Vanilla cake with Nutella filling Chocolate cake with Oreo filling Funfetti cake with Vanilla custard filling (initially had Funfetti filling but they recommended the custard filling) Marble cake with Chocolate mousse (initially had Chocolate filling but they recommended chocolate mousse) Pistachio cake with Chocolate mousse filling

When I went in for the cake-tasting, my now-husband had an unexpected meeting so he was unable to make it. When I arrived, they had me wait for 5 mins while they finished prepping my testers. They brought it out & WOW, the presentation for the cake-tasting was impressive. I was expecting a couple of square cake sections with a plop of frostings that I would have to put together myself. lol. They noticed that I was alone so they asked if I wanted to take it home and then let them know if we wanted to move forward with ordering a cake from them. I agreed and they boxed it up & I made my way home.

I wish could say I had a favorite combo from chosen cakes/fillings, but when cake tasting with my husband ---- we both agreed that the cakes were dry & all the frosting tasted like butter, almost no flavor. Even the red velvet cake didn't have much flavor which was surprising. The only combo that had a slight flavor was the chocolate cake with oreo filling but it wasn't anything to write home about. So unfortunately, we didn't end up ordering our wedding cake from them.

We did however put an order in for 100 cannolis (75 chocolate chip & 25 pistachios) for our dessert table. We took a bite for pictures, but by the end of the night our dessert table was demolished & there was nothing left --- this is a good sign. This is the second time we've had cannolis from here & they're okay - it could have more flavor.

I brought cakes from this place for over two years and never have had a bad experience with them intill this time around. I go to place an order during their open hours but when I got there it was closed. I thought no big deal I’ll just order another day but I should have taken that as my sign to not order from them. I come in the next day and place the order. I just wanted a simple white frosted cake with a few flowers around it with some cake toppers I was bringing in the day before my order was due. The cake alone with no flowers or toppers was 210 and the girl helping messed up my email and name after repeating it to her 5 different times. I come in the next week after not receiving the invoice to see if there was a mess up or if my order was still there. The lady comes out and has the worse attitude and I explain to her my situation and all she gave me was a story of changes in the shop which I understand and gave them grace but the girl was the cake decorator and was not in good safety at all along with the other employees who where also working on cakes. Their hair was undone and definitely could fall into the food. The cake decorator also was rude and would not let me explain and just kept saying “ I know” in the worse tone possible when I was just trying to confirm if they still had my order since I had no invoice because the previous girl messed up. She also informed me my price will lower as the original price given was no the right price. Spoiler alert it never did lower after that trip I still have not received a invoice and had to call again a speak with them for the 4th time asking for my invoice in order to pay for my cake. Same lady responded and in the same nasty tone. I ended up finally getting the invoice and paid right away. Pick up day arrives and I get to the shop a hour after the pick up time and the cake was still not ready. I was supposed to pick it up at 1pm but I got a hold up at the event and came in at 2pm instead. I come up to the door and they are closed! With a sign saying will open up at 2 it was 2:09 and they were not in fact open. They noice me and open the door after gasping at my sight. Then they hand me the cake I am disappointed as the flowers were not even cut to make them look nice and seemed like didn’t care into their work. I also then notice my cake toppers were missing and I informed the same nasty lady who had her butt crack showing this time too they were missing she gave me a dirty look before realizing the toppers were in fact missing and I had to wait another 30 minutes to get my cake. I didn’t get my cake intill about 2:45pm when it should have been done by 1. I get home and when I’m about to cut the cake I notice that half of the flowers were not wrapped before putting them in the cake and the ones that were wrapped were wrapped with a very sticky residue leaving tape that left residue on the cake slices. This was not food safe at all. This situation saddens me as I never have had an experience like this before in all my times from ordering. The cakes from here are delicious, ive only had the cake from here. Not too sweet, just right and soft spongy cake. I reached out via Instagram and was responded pretty quick. Was able to meet the baker and agreed on the characters of my choosing. However I was told the character on top would be fondant and it was not, I was not made aware it was going to be a toy either. (The first pic was what I requested & the next 2 was the cake I paid for) in all the cake was pretty good, taste good other then that character on top. Another thing that did almost made me want my money back was when I picked it up, I was so excited to pick this cake up. The young lady who gave me the cake was not very nice and has no customer service what so ever. I said “oh my god it is so cute” and she makes such a blank yet stank face and says “yea I guess” honestly I thought the top character was fondant so I was shocked how good it looked but when I got to the car I realized it was just a toy I thought maybe that’s why she reacted like that? However I needed the cake for that same night and had no time to figure out a replacement but i was so close to just going back in and asking for my money back.
