This is a hard review to write. Village Baking company was a special place for me as a child, and was my first job in highschool. For decades had the highest quality pastries and was instrumental in starting me off on my journey of baking, pastry and food in general.. Service: 5/5 Food quality: 2/5 Price: a little on the high side for what we got Josephine was very kind and helpful, and patient as we slowly made our selections. The food items we ordered were: Apple Tart: 5/5 -- this was good, nicely textured tart shell, thinly sliced apples and flavor was great. Apricot Pocket and Raspberry Pocket: 5/5 -- Both were fresh, light flakey pastry and the just right amount of fruit filling. Blueberry Muffin: 5/5 -- fresh, moist inside of the muffin, nice crisp/crumbly streusel topping. Chocolate Chip Muffin: 4/5 -- yummy, semisweet chocolate chips and nice texture. A bit more dry than the blueberry. Cranberry Pecan Scone: 3/5 -- lovely fresh scone - although I had ordered an almond scone and had been looking forward to an almond scone for months! 😬 I didn't check the box until I got home and noticed it was the wrong flavor. The cranberry pecan scone was fresh, moist yet crumbly and the classic scone texture. It was good, just not what I had ordered. Almond Bear Claw: 1/5 -- this was a disappointment. The bear claw has no glaze on the outside of the pastry leaving it dry and not quit sweet enough. I cut into the pastry to see how the filling was. The almond paste inside the pastry was thick, and I was so excited to see that! However it was maybe only 20% pure almond paste and the rest was some kind of filler that was not almond paste. The almond flavor was almost non existent. The actual pastry dough was average quality. Similar to Panera or any other chain bakery.

Really disappointed. McHenry Village has been a local favorite since forever, but something has changed. The owners, the baker or something. I ordered a German chocolate cake for a very dear friends Mom’s birthday. The cake was beautiful, as you can see from the photo. The cake itself was horribly sweet, it was full of buttercream frosting and just the top had the actual German chocolate icing. Even the kiddos said it was too sweet and walked away from the cake. Really disappointing. I also ordered the chicken pot pie to take home for my Dad and it was so stale and had no flavor that we gave it to the neighbors dog over the fence. Lastly, I purchased a cheese danish and savory Keish slice to eat on the way home. The cheese danish went out the window for the birds to eat due to it being so stale and dry. The savory Keish slice was decent and I was able to eat this. I spent $50 on a basic, buttercream ā€œGerman chocolateā€ cake that was sadly disappointing that seriously I would have been better off getting a boxed cake mix and icing in a can from the store. The cake was very pretty though…. There is generally plenty of safe and free ADA and regular parking in their parking lot. The inside is decent and dated. The faux display cakes are full of dust and dirt and definitely need cleaning and/or changed out. The staff were extremely friendly, helpful, and kind. Even with the staff and pretty cakes; I will not be back, For the amount of money spent, I’d expect an actual German chocolate cake and not a chocolate buttercream cake….

Although the cake was delicious, its appearance was a flop. We asked for a pink marble cake made with fondant. Since the theme of my party was floral, I asked for a soft pink color, but when I asked for flecks of gold scattered around the cake for the design, I was told it would be an extra $15. However when I received the cake, it was nothing like the way I was told it would turn out. The marble did not look right and the shade of pink was a harsh hot pink that I did not expect at all, and they ended up adding the gold specks for free to make up for it. I did not mind this as much as I did later on during the party when the cake began to TILT sideways! It was slowly falling over onto its side over a course of a couple hours. This forced me to cut the cake quickly, and when I did I immediately noticed that there was only one thin straw supporting the cake on the inside. Keep in mind that this was a three layer cake! Despite all of this, the cake was delicious but I just wished that the appearance had met those standards.

🌟 Village Baking Company: A Hidden Gem! 🌟

Hey everyone! I just had the most amazing experience at Village Baking Company, and I couldn't wait to share it with all of you! šŸ˜

First off, let me start by saying that the location of this place is absolutely fantastic. Nestled in the heart of our beloved village, it's the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy some delicious treats. šŸ”

But what truly made my visit memorable was the incredible Jessie, who greeted me with the warmest smile and made me feel right at home. Her genuine hospitality instantly brightened my day! šŸŒž

Now, let's talk about the food and drinks. Oh my goodness, where do I even begin? The coffee here is top-notch, and the fact that they offer four refills is a game-changer! ā˜•ļø I mean, who doesn't love a place that keeps your caffeine fix going strong?

And let's not forget about the cakes and pastries. They are simply divine! šŸ°šŸ„ Each bite was a burst of flavors that left me craving for more. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

However, I must share a rather amusing incident that happened during my visit. As I was enjoying my time, savoring the last few moments before closing, I noticed a lady starting to slam the chairs in front of me. It was like a subtle hint, a gentle nudge to remind everyone that it was time to bid adieu to the village. šŸ˜…

Curiosity got the better of me, so I mustered up the courage to ask her the closing time. To my surprise, she replied, "5:30 pm," while it was 4:59 pm! Talk about being punctual! ā°

But hey, I guess it's a testament to their commitment to closing on time. So, if you plan on visiting, make sure to keep an eye on the clock and savor every last sip and bite before the village bids you farewell for the day! šŸ˜‰

All in all, Village Baking Company is a true gem that combines a great location, friendly staff, amazing coffee, and mouthwatering pastries. It's a place that will leave you with a smile on your face and a satisfied tummy. Trust me, you don't want to miss out on this delightful experience!

They have horrible service! I went there on October 1st a Saturday afternoon only wanting a couple apple turnovers. I was the second person in line with at least 5 people behind me. We're all waiting to be served and no one was even attempting to help any of us. There were no employees behind the counter. Maybe they were short handed who knows, I work in customer service and I know telling customers you will be right there to help them goes a long way. A gentleman came out from the back, I immediately asked if they were short handed, he answered me by saying, "I don't know" Really! I waited for about 12 minutes when I finally gave up and left. Within those minutes no one came out from the back. When I got to my car, I noticed 2 other customers walked out of their bakery. They have such yummy goodies but how can anyone get their hands on some of those goodies if the employees are in the back of the bakery when they are customers out front! I do plan on going back to try once more and I plan on telling the manager about my experience. Who knows what will happen but I plan on saying something regardless. I just moved here from San Jose, and to be treated this way is very disappointing and horrible. In San Jose there is a Landmark of a bakery called Peter's Bakery, it's the best in San Jose and their customer service is OUTSTANDING!!!! Peter's Bakery are fast and very friendly to their customers, this is why Peter's Bakery has so much business. I miss going there. I thought I found a new Bakery here but after this I don't know. However I will try...
