It's difficult to imagine we've lived in the Lowcountry for three years now and this is the first time I've visited Music Man's Bar-B-Que. No matter, what's done is done now, I can only prepare and look forward to the future. And I will be back here in the very near future.
It was happen-chance that my son and I would stop by here today. Pal'ing around, getting him a haircut from his favorite hair stylist who recently moved to the newly built Great Clips, we decided to get some grub. It was between another place and here, though the decision was made fairly quick as we were in the mood for BBQ.
Entering, we were greeted by Miss Ester (hope I spelled that correctly). And soon after, by another very friendly lady whose name escapes me (very sorry, I'll catch it when I come back). The service was very personable and their food was excellent. I'm a bit of a BBQ "snob" I suppose you could say. So I have to reserve 5 stars for, well, my favorite (it's in TN though). But, if four and a half would be given, I would've.
The BBQ chicken, was tender, moist, not soggy, not dry, not old, not any of the other bad attributes one could associate with a bad dish, but.. was very nice. I enjoyed the fact that they offer a leg/thigh and a wing/breast cuts as well. It was a refreshing sort of change from just a leg, or just a thigh or, etc. It's the little things. I wish I had come on an emptier stomach, because, I could have gone to town on the chicken. The pulled pork though, lest not forget about the pulled pork. I cannot comment on the mustard based pulled pork (I'm simply not a fan of mustard), though the vinegar... it was exxxxxcellent. It was spiced just as I like a pulled pork. Not too much pepper, not too acidic (but there is some acidic kick, the vinegar is NOT over-powering) and really, just a perfect recipe. The pulled pork was still stringy (but tender) and was perfectly moist (not soggy). Really, it was good. The green beans were delightful as well. JUST green beans. Not all doctored up with that, or that.. they weren't soggy, or tasting of prior froze burnt yuck, none of that bad "stuff", rather, just a perfectly nice cut green bean. (Thank you for that). The candied yams/sweet potato (I admit, I still don't know the difference), had just enough sweetness added, just enough butter (detected) and I believe some brown sugar and perhaps a splash of vanilla. If I had to guess. If that's wrong, at least you have an idea of the taste to expect from it. The flavor and sweetness was cooked throughout the yam as well, none of that sweet outside but starchy inside. That was a treat as well. The Mac and Cheese, was yum. I'm not a big Mac and Cheese fan (I know, its sacrilegious), though my son is and he gave his two thumbs up seal of approval. He had a lemonade while I had a sweet tea. He had three glasses while there, making note it was good (normally a quiet teen unless asked). And the sweet tea had a perfect amount of sweetness, was fresh and refreshing.
Overall, a great visit. A great group of ladies met. And I even learned a bit of history of both the building and the establishment itself. In other words, some very nice community friendly conversation. THIS is why I -love- and seek out "mom pop" businesses.
To note: Their new hours are 7 days a week, 11am to 8:30pm. Thursdays is fried catfish. Friday's is Fried Chicken. Saturdays and Sundays are RIBS. Wednesday is Chicken and Dumplings. I -believe- the buffet with its normally stocked items are still available on these days as well, as I...
Read moreBarbecue buffet, two words that make my stomach sing! As a food/restaurant enthusiast, it hurts me deeply to have to write this review, especially after good friends touted this place as being one of the best barbecue joints around. For starters, the location is accessible enough and the parking is somewhat sufficient. When I got to the door I had high hopes but upon entering my enthusiasm was quickly doused. The color scheme and lighting gave it a very 'bland' appearance. As I approached the bar I saw signs of redemption, the classics-pulled pork, red rice, macaroni and cheese. All dishes that if done right are food for your soul but if done wrong can be a dagger in your heart. Unfortunately I experienced the latter... The red rice had little to no meat and it was clearly visible that the 'red' that should have been soaked into the rice was instead mixed in giving it a ketchup and white rice appearance, the taste equally lackluster. But I persevered on to the macaroni and cheese which at first glance looked incredible until I started plating it. Baked macaroni and cheese has been a staple of my life for as long as I can remember. The ingredients, the consistency, the texture, all things that have to be done right which in this case left much to be desired as it was in fact macaroni sitting under cheese. Sadly, just as bland as the decor which segues us to the pulled pork. It was very hard for me to accept the fact that it was watery in texture and appearance and that the only difference between the three varieties was sauce that was mixed in haphazardly. It was akin to meat that had been previously frozen, thawed out, and then underheated. To avoid falling further down the rabbit hole suffice to say the rest of the selection, dessert included, falls under the same precipice. On the bright side, the iced tea was some of the best I've had out of a restaurant in quite some time. But that does not warrant the price tag. I'm hoping that this was just an isolated incident and that I just had a bad experience. Perhaps I'll give it another try another day but in this business first impressions mean a lot, so you've got to be good every time...
Read moreI visited recenty and found that the reviews were exaggerating. Customer service was good but not excellent. I felt like they were really pushy about getting the buffet but I did not want the buffet due to the reviews Ive read about it. I wanted something alittle more fresh. I ordered a half rack of ribs, mac and cheese and potato salad. My food came out pretty quick but it seemed as if it were reheated..not going to say it was but thats what it seemed like. While my potato salad had no flavor the mac and cheese was ok. It wasnt super fresh. In my opinion it was dry and slightly bland. The rack of ribs was okay. It was moist and was easy to bite into. The bbq sauce wasnt my cup of tea. There was this mustardy sauce and a vinegar sauce. I didnt ask if they had anymore. The building did look historic and cute. There were dirty/rusty air vents which was kind of gross. There was one near the buffet and it made me assume that some dust blow into the food, unless thats the look they are going and its all prop. Overall, i...
