Gus's restaurant has been a longtime staple in Monroe serving great food .. Now under new ownership with a completely remodeled restaurant they have raised the bar , the food is excellent . We tried it with friends for lunch on Sunday , on Sunday you can have breakfast or lunch . Three of our party had breakfast & one tried lunch . If you are truly hungry, try one of their large breakfast combos. It is sure to keep you full most of the day. They come with three eggs , choice of grits , hash browns , or home fries . More than one meat plus either pancakes , french toast or Belgian waffle depending on which you order . Very hearty . I tried a Grecian Omelette which was filled with olives. tomato , feta cheese & more . It was amazing & so delicious. I had grits & a biscuit . I ordered a side of sausage gravy to go with my biscuit , it was delicious, thick , full of sausage & flavor ! Another in our party had the hamburger steak , with yams , fried okra & roll . I of course tasted a bit of this & that , the vegetables were very good as was the hamburger steak . The gentlemen in our party went with the hearty breakfast combos. If you order one be hungry . Read moreThe restaurant was clean and inviting. This is my very first visit. I dine out for breakfast everyday, so I have a pretty good idea what is a reasonable price for breakfast. I ordered the Super Star with these choices. Three eggs, any style, served with hash brown, home fries or Grits, bacon, sausage patties and links and a half order of French Toast for $13.99. I ordered the Super Star with coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice, and opted for turkey bacon instead of pork bacon, because I thought I had the choice. Got the bill and I was a little surprised. Charged an upcharge of $2.00 for the turkey bacon and $6.99 for freshly squeezed orange juice. A $13.99 breakfast with coffee, orange juice, turkey bacon with the upcharges came to about $28.00 for one meal. That's two breakfast meals! Waitress did not make me aware of and upcharge for the turkey bacon because I thought I had the choice to chose between pork or turkey. She also didn't mention the price for the freshly squeezed orange juice because the prices for drinks aren't listed on the menu. I would not have ordered freshly squeezed orange juice if I saw the price on the menu for $6.99 for a small glass and I wouldn't have chosen turkey bacon for a $2.00 upcharge if I was told I couldn't make turkey bacon part of my breakfast without the upcharge. Although the service and food and the restaurant itself was pleasant. I may not be returning anytime soon to Gus's Restaurant. Perhaps they can work on their...
Read moreA first time visitor like me may not expect from the location and exterior to find such a gem behind the doors. Yet, voila, this restaurant is definitely a diamond in a coal mine. I got a simple carry-out order of a garden omelet with home fries and two egg and cheese biscuits. The home fries were for my husband who was waiting in the car, yet a mysterious creature ate half of them before he got them because they were so, so good. I only meant to peek at his order, but the scrumptious scent of seasonings hit me and I had to taste just one, then two, then a handful... My bad.
The egg and cheese biscuits were for me. Fantastic, fluffy, light, buttermilk biscuits with cheddar jack cheese that melted in my mouth...
The best part is whatever oils they use are nice and gentle on my stomach that's been giving me such a hard time lately, so the food went down and stayed down perfectly and I feel light and alert despite eating a little bit of everything.
The ONLY reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the lack of waiting area for carry-out patrons. Otherwise they deserve 5 stars. The dining floor and room is pristine, newly renovated, and family friendly.
Gus' is absolutely on my list of...
