I live for sweets, I love cupcakes, I love donuts, cookies, specialty desserts and hidden treasures, the whole nine yards. You cut me and I'm bleeding sugar, it's that serious! My wife and I will literally travel miles for a memorable sweet treat without giving it a second thought so when Groupon said there was a Cronut maker in Claremont, we were there! A 20 mile drive for fried croissants filled with love was just the type of morning we were looking forward to... But that soon would change.
I ordered an assortment of pastries with mini cronuts among the bunch and was sorely underwhelmed. They were ok but "ok" was not the kind of reaction New Yorker's were giving after they consumed their version. I heard words like "speechless" and "phenomenal" "best thing I've ever eaten" not 'ah it was ok' but that was just the type of reaction my family and I had after trying Dolce's version. It was pretty much a soft cannoli...that was it. Nothing special. The cream was ordinary and lacking something memorable like....umm... flavor that's it. The gigantic Mexican wedding cookie was chalky and the fruit filling used for the Danish made me think they opted for raspberry kool-aid instead of real raspberries when making it. Very artificial. I wasn't blown away by the cake pops either. My co-worker makes better cake pops and she's a soccer mom, not a professional pastry chef.
Here's what really did it for me! I would have given them 3 stars but their coffee was terrible! Not something that you would expect from a place that calls themselves a drinkery and gourmet bakery. Mc Donald's has better coffee...freaking Mc Donald's and their Mc Cafe section. That's just sheer buffoonery at its finest. Maybe the food is better but I guess we'll never know because I won't be making that trip back anytime soon, I'm sorry. Maybe if you are close you can stop in or something but for foodies like us, don't waste your time or gas money, 7 eleven has better coffee and dare I say a better Danish....
Read moreI ordered a custom cake for my daughters birthday from Dolce Bakery in Montclair. My daughter a skate theme. She wanted a dark chocolate skate themed cake with raspberry mousse and whipped cream icing. The cake was to be done in shades of lavender, purple and black. The person I put the order in with, a lady named Alice, sent me a pic of the pink and white cake below as an example cake. Our cake would just be the bottom layer, in lavander black and purple with a coordinating skate on top. TWO HOURS before the party I get a text from Alice. The bakery messed up and put dark chocolate mousse in my daughters cake instead of the raspberry mousse. She said they would give me 20% off. I said ok because it's not an awful mistake and the party is today and I need a cake. I get to the bakery to pick up the cake and it doesn't look like the example pic. The pic below on the left is what I was told our cake would look like, and the pic on the right is what the cake they wanted to charge me $110 for looks like. Then When I told the person behind thecounter that the skate didn't look like it was supposed to, he flippantly said "Well, our designers are all gone for the day so there's nothing I can do about that." THEN they didn't have a box for the cake and wanted us to just carry the cake out with no box and drive it home. "We don't carry boxes for our custom cakes." I just couldn't do it. I hardly ever complain, I know that businesses are people's sources of income and I try hard to give grace if something is less than stellar..but what if this was someone's wedding or quinceanera cake? It would be so sad for them. They asked for my debit card and I just left the cake at the bakery and didn't pay. I had to run to the store and buy a cheap last minute cake and cupcakes AND we were late to our own kids party. Edit: it won't let me post pictures so I don't know how...

In April 2023, I went to Dolce Bakery (now called Layered Cakerie) to get a quote for a birthday cake for my 80yr old Godmother. I needed a cake for 50 people and wanted to know the cost of a 2-Tier or 3-Tier Cake. Note: I have never purchased this type of cake before so I was hoping someone would help me. Anyway the lady assigned to help me wanted to know what the colors were, what design I wanted, if I wanted it bonded. I did not know any of these answers because I was in still the early planning stages. I asked her if she could help me or if I should look through her photo album to get better ideas.
âShe told me (in a rude, arrogant & mean spirited tone) that it wouldnât matterâ So I decided to show her a picture of the 2-Tier cake that was purchased 5yrs prior for my godmotherâs party.
*You will not believe what she said. She told me âOh that cake looks like childâs cake!!!â
Actually, it was a very beautiful cake but for some reason she decided she wanted to be extremely Rude & Insult me. To instantly make me feel like I was beneath her.
Pls know that I did absolutely nothing to cause her to be so mean spirited towards me. I went there looking for help & a quote. But I encountered a small Asian rude lady named Alice.
Words of Wisdom to Upper Management !!! If Alice is still working at this bakeryâŚ.
**she needs to remain at the back of the bakery. In the kitchen away from customers since she does not know how to communicate politely to the customers!!!! And if you are the manager of this store .. shame on youâšď¸
PS - Iâve been going to this bakery for over 7yrs. There Cakes are excellent but after April 2023 I have...
