Rodrigo's Mexican Grill - Montclair — Restaurant in Montclair

Went out to eat with a friend...it wasn’t the plan to eat here but everywhere else had 1+ hour wait times. These definitely are strange times we are living in don’t get me wrong I like eating outside but wait times on a Saturday night are ridiculous. Anyways we ended up stumbling upon this gem- no wait time- at first we were a bit nervous.....no wait time and mostly white patrons at a Mexican restaurant usually isn’t a great sign lol. But they were great the chile relleno I had was great so was the beans and rice- the strawberry margaritas were better. I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 because I didn’t like the overload of unidentifiable yet tasty sauce they had on everything on my plate and the random chopped up lettuce randomly thrown on top......And the man bringing drinks and bussing the table should have been better groomed as in clean cut......but all in all great experience. Next time less sauce I wanna see the beautiful chile next time....there will definitely be...

I been going to this place over the last few years before it was called Don Jose's and back then food was delicious now its ok not great at least on our recent visits the food has been ok the salsa and chips are good the guacamole did not taste fresh and it was a bit brown.. the tortillas were hard especially around the edges were hard to chew ..the chicken fajitas the veggies were burned and the chicken was tasteless and not tender.. rice and beans were good .. enchilada plate was good but not great .the soda tasted old like the machine it gets dispense from needs cleaning..the pińa colada was good right amount of alcohol . service was great friendly people .. atmosphere was good.. we been here twice recently and food was just not up to our standards but maybe we should try different foods maybe those will be better ..the place is big and has a large bar area great to grab some drinks .. we will come back to try different food...

Update: 8/18/25: Everything was terrific! The host was a Hispanic man, very gentile and gracious, and seated us right away. Our water, Manuel, was excellent. He checked on us regularly, was friendly and happy to serve and interact with us. Everything came in a timely manner and oh my goodness, it was top notch! We could tell they only use the best quality ingredients. The chips are light and crispy and the salsa delicious. The Classic Margaritas were smooth, better than we've ever had. Even the chicken taco was exceptional. Thank you for the great experience!

Previous: Our waiter was terrific! He actually put the dishes thoughtfully where they would go and was very attentive and considerate of what we might need. And of course, the food is always exceptional. The 3 item combo is a good deal... 3 meals' worth st least! Can't beat it...well except for the fajitas! That's at least 4 or 5 meals! Our home a away...
