Great Italian Food - but beware of upcharges!

My wife and I enjoyed the daily special, which was a penne Bolognese. Nice flavors, plenty of meat in the sauce, and tender pasta. There was an extra plate charge of $3 to split the order. The pasta was $18 plus the extra $3...

The special had one free side, so I ordered a side Caesar salad and was charged an extra $2.50. Apparently on the menu is says only the house side salad is free. The extra cost of the Caesar side wasn't a good value at all.

My wife had a Mario's special salad, which she enjoyed. We had to remind the server to bring the salad dressing.

We began the meal with a stuffed banana peppers appetizer. The menu said they were spicy banana peppers and they were too spicy for my wife. I'd never had this dish before, so I was glad to order it and try it - but just once.

Overall - we enjoyed the food. The service was friendly but just average. And the prices were higher than they should have been after the upcharges. We were on a tight schedule to have dinner before a show downtown, they were able and ready to accommodate us at short notice there was 6 in our party. I will say however the food was unacceptable to everyone at the table. Besides taking a long time to get any appetizers to the table they were cold and seemed to have been sitting waiting to be brought to our table. I not being a pasta girl ordered a filet. It came out over done ( I asked for mr or on the rarer side) it was mw when it came out I had them re cook one for me and that came out tasting like it was microwaved thus I didn’t eat it. We all know what microwaved meet tastes like. The rest of the food was eye appealing but not very tasty, the shrimp was over done on one dish and several others stated their food was basically tasteless. The portions were bigger than they needed to be, we would have rather had smaller portions and flavorful meals. We left most food behind. Average to Mediocre! This place needs a restaurant impossible makeover! Decor is outdated... Bread rolls came in an over sized pasta plate swimming in a pool of a mix of 50/50 butter and margarine per the waitress, yuck! Food presentation was meh, ordered bruschetta, it tasted fine, but looked horrid, tomatoes were not red and bright, but brown and dull, all other dishes came with a horrible garnish of raw vegetables which looked awful. The provolone wheel was not coated in bread crumbs, just flour which made it unappealing. Every dish had an overly sweet marinara which was heavily coated with Parmesan cheese, I mean heavily coated using several Tablespoons. Veal was not high quality, just budget cuts, like patties. Pasta was not fresh, and was saturated in water, not properly drained. Overall, meh and would NEVER come back. Based on the Hotel service vans coming and going, their only clientele seems to be travelers from the local lodging establishments. If you are from out of town, don't waste...
