Disappointed in the New Direction
I’ve been a long-time fan of North Country Donuts in Morrisville, VT since it opened and like many in the community, I appreciated the quality, the size, and the taste that made this place stand out.
After stopping in this morning, it’s clear that the shop has significantly changed — and not for the better.
Since the ownership changed hands in December, the difference is hard to ignore.
The fritters, once generous and packed with flavor, are now about a third of the size.
The donuts themselves are smaller, and more importantly, they just don’t taste the same. In fact, the “Johnny Cake” donut I had today could have been an “old fashioned” straight from a Dunkin’ Donuts case — and that’s not a compliment.
It feels like the new owners are trying to cut costs while charging the same prices, and in doing so, they’re chipping away at the very thing that made North Country Donuts special: QUALITY.
It’s disappointing to see a business with a great reputation for craftsmanship and care lose its way. It reminds me of what happens when a private equity firm buys up a beloved company and slowly hollows it out.
I hope the new owners realize that reputation matters. And once it’s gone, it’s not easy...
Read moreNicole and her team at North Country Cakes made us the most beautiful wedding cake I have ever seen, AND it tasted better than any cake I have ever had! If you are considering NCC for your wedding cake, please just go for it because I cannot recommend them enough. I thought that we would have to have a wedding cake that would spend half the day in the fridge and would be covered in a thick layer of fondant to keep it structurally sound (not something I wanted at all!) because our wedding was in the Summer. Our cake had no fondant (hooray) and was covered in a beautifully delicious buttercream, and it was able to stay out in our reception area unrefrigerated for hours until the party started. Nicole was a joy to work with, and I can’t tell you how many people told me that it was the best tasting wedding cake they had ever had. I was nervous that the cake would taste delicious during the tasting sessions but wouldn’t be as good on a large scale for the wedding itself, and honestly, I think it may have tasted even better at the wedding. It was moist, decedent, and not overpoweringly sweet. Thank you so much Nicole for giving us the wedding cake...
Read moreThe place looks cute and the donuts are displayed beautifully. We got; the banana cream, the creme brulee, the chocolate glazed, the cinnamon sugar, the maple glazed, the salted chocolate, the coffee oreo, and the apple fritter. The apple fritter was the best, it wasn't too gooey and it wasn't over fried. The coffee oreo was devoured by my wife who likes coffee. The banana cream and the creme brulee were typical cream filled but they really did hit their mark with the flavor of the filling. The maple glazed was interesting, not a regular glazed and not a heavy maple flavor but something in between. The salted chocolate was another interesting one, I've had sales carmel and this went that direction but wasn't what I expected as a cake donut. The cinnamon was the most normal and I can easily say that the dough that they use is fantastic in comparison to other companies. It was fluffy and flavorful just making it stand up to other donuts. The chocolate glazed was just off, the dough reminded me of a thick Krispy Kreme without frosting, but the frosting tasted like melting chocolate that is for fun...
