Great that we finally have good quality Indian food in Charleston. More specifically, to have dosas in general in SC is unheard of. I only had their Mysore Masala Dosa; it was great! It doesn't compare to dosas in Atlanta/NYC's top dosa restaurants of course, but still pretty good. Then again, dosas aren't their specialty, but they're good enough to where I will go again in the future. Compared to other Indian restaurants, it is definitely a few dollars overpriced on key items (i.e., their mysole masala dosa is $19, the same price as you'd get in downtown Manhattan), but there's not much other competition/options in the CHS area.
The restaurant seems a bit understaffed and small in physical size for the sheer level of demand there is. Expect long waits during peak dinner days. They only take to-go orders online on their website, not on the phone. Some customers tried ordering on the phone (but no one picked up b/c of how busy they are); they then came in person to place a take out order only to find that the wait for ordering take-out was hours b/c of how backed up the kitchen was.
I want to give 5 stars, but I give 4 b/c of their current system for take out and the accuracy of the Estimated Time to Make The Food. I ordered a dosa at 5 pm, and the online system said it'd be ready at 6 pm. I got there at 6 and they hadn't even started making it. I finally got it at 6:30 pm. I understand they can get busy, and I don't mind if it takes a long time to make, but they need to have a better system for letting the take-out folks know when to arrive to pick up their food (i.e,. more accuracy for estimated time the food is available).
I'm fine even if I'm told it will take 2 hours to make the food, but they should not have a situation where someone arrives at the time they are told to arrive at, and then suddenly you're waiting for 30 mins for food. I'd rather have spent those 30 extra minutes at home doing something else than to be waiting at the restaurant parking lot. If they could send texts that the food will be ready in 10-20 mins etc, that would be helpful.
If this system improves or I have a few more positive experiences with take-out, I'll happily change my review to 5 stars from 4. My hope is that they will get more staff and a better system for communicating when food will be ready...
Read moreMy brothers and I grew up in a small town in the Midwest. We were very fortunate enough to have an Indian family to invite our family to their family dinners when we were very young. And our family had their family over for our family dinners, as well! Those experiences of acceptance and new experiences on both sides formed a basis for cuisine for us. Of course, we've had a ton of experiences since then, but there's nothing like bringing you back to home! That's exactly what Spice Palette did for my brother and me tonight! The staff is wonderful! They made us feel like we were part of the family! Walking in, it smelled like Grandma Narsinghini's kitchen! We wanted to try as much as we could, so we got both samosas (potato and lamb). The taste of the lamb samosa transported me back to that kitchen! (8-yr old me, standing on a stool, learning how to fold the dough! She let me taste the filling out of the pot.) Absolutely delightful! The potato samosas were also very good, but not as good as Grandma Narsinghini's. (She set the bar very high!) Omigoodness! The butter chicken is so very amazing!!!!! I could eat it every day! This is actually better than any I've ever had! (Sorry, Grandma!) Seriously, it's amazing!!!!!! The goat chettindau was also amazing! Neither of us had had it before. It's similar to a dish Grandma made, but like I wrote earlier, we wanted to try as much as we could! The fresh naan is amazing! Seriously, how can you not like fresh naan? What we were not expecting were the very large portions of everything. (I'm not complaining, my brother and I have enough leftovers for 2 more meals! Yay!) But new people need to know that each dish feeds at least 2 people! 5 stars! Fantastic...
Read moreI was on vacation with my family and was craving some Indian food and came across Spice Palette. The reviews were good so decided to check it out and it definitely lived up to the reviews.
For drinks we got mango lassi’s for the kids and I ordered the Spicy Andhra on the cocktail menu. If you like a spicy cocktail I highly recommend the Spicy Andhra. The mango lassi’s were delicious. I contemplated ordering one for myself but decided to get another Spicy Andhra.
The menu has a ton of options but we mostly stuck to our normal go to’s. For appetizers we ordered the Vegetable Samosas, Bhel Poori, and the waiter who was actually the owner, recommended the Malabar Sham Savera. All the apps were great but the Malabar Sham Savera was amazing. I’ve never had it before and am so happy the owner recommended it.
For entrees we ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, Palak Spinach with Paneer, and an order of Garlic Chili Naan. Everything was delicious and the portions are very generous. We had enough leftovers for dinner the next two days.
I can’t compliment the owner and staff enough. I’ve been to a ton of Indian restaurants in my lifetime and Spice Palette is hands down the best Indian restaurant I’ve ever been to. The residents of Mount Pleasant/Charleston have a gem in an area full of amazing restaurants. Spice Palette will be my first stop when...
