The hibachi chef at Fujiyama made this the most fun hibachi we've ever had. He kept everyone at the table entertained, from the toddler to the preteen to the adults. He gave the kids some cooked egg while making the rice so they'd have some food to tide them over.
He had a bottle of sake that he offered to squirt into the adults' mouths, and a baby bottle of soda to squirt into the kids' mouths. Everyone had a blast with this. Rather than flipping shrimp into guests' mouths, he used cooked egg, which worked out better because he could keep going until you caught one. 10/10 entertainment value.
Food was very good as well. I ordered steak and scallops; steak was good, scallops were cooked perfectly but could have used a touch more seasoning. The shrimp, veggies, and rice were all done nicely. We also ordered a couple Philadelphia rolls (my kid kept trying to barter his soup away for more sushi, lol) and the shrimp dumplings (which us parents had to claim quickly because kiddo wanted them all), so all excellent there.
The server was awesome as well, took very good care of us throughout the meal. He proactively brought to-go containers towards the end of the meal, as well as cups for the sauce.
This was just such a fun and delicious night, and if we're ever in Mt Vernon again we'll be stopping...
Read moreDo not order Hibachi here unless at tables and see them cook it. To avoid a 45 min wait for hibachi tables (short staffed), we were told hibachi in regular seating was the same…just without the show. It was not the same and it was awful. The vegetables had a flavor and texture of being steamed and the shrimp was soggy like it was boiled. It then came with a brown sauce poured over the top (say what…for hibachi??). To add insult to injury, our waiter asked why we felt it was different and subpar. So I told him and showed him how our food looked different than what was being served at hibachi tables. He said, “I see. Let me talk with manager and see about a discount.” After a few minutes he delivered check for full amount. No reduction in price nor explanation. I asked why and he said manager said no. I insisted to see the manager. When he came over he said everything was done exactly the same as at the tables. We showed how it was different and he just shrugged shoulders and said it was hibachi. Felt deceived and overcharged for lower quality food. And, if they are going to do that then don’t ask my opinion and offer to reduce price and then not do with no explanation. This place used to be great but will avoid it going forward. Recommend...
Read moreI've been to a number of Japanese Hibachi restaurants and I felt this one was just ok, but not great. On the plus side the portions were very generous and the price was more reasonable than some similar places. On the minus side they seat 10 people around the hibachi (rather than the 8 I've seen at most places) so it's a bit cramped. Having this many diners at the table also makes it harder for the chef. There were 10 people seared at the table we were at. 6 ordered chicken, 3 ordered shrimp and 1 ordered salmon. The chef put all the proteins on the hibachi at the same time. He served the salmon first, but even so, it really looked overcooked (he cooked it on each side twice). The shrimp was served next, but it too looked overcooked, and one of the people in my party who ordered it said it was 'a bit dry'. The chef finally got all of the chicken cut up, seasoned, and served. It too was overcooked, and while it had teriyaki sauce on it, the teriyaki was hard to taste. The chicken was definitely dry and a bit chewy, and a lot more teriyaki sauce would have helped. Overall, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't the best experience I've ever had at that type...
