Roger Bar at the Ameswell Hotel boasts a cool setup - indoor/outdoor seating, self-serve ordering, and even lawn games! It "seemed perfect" for our large group of 23. Here's the breakdown:
The Good
Appetizers: The hummus and cheese plate were delicious! The lavash bread with the hummus was perfectly seasoned, and the sweet and fruity crackers on the cheese board were a delightful surprise.
Drinks: The tierra madre mezcal cocktail was a standout - smoky and salty in the best way. The blueberry fizz mocktail was a sweet and refreshing option for non-drinkers.
Service Speed: Our food came out quickly, which is impressive for a big group.
Free Parking: Free parking for the first 3 hours in the hotel garage is a plus.
The Bad
Service Attentiveness: While the food came out fast, the drink service was a total mess. Several people in our group ordered drinks multiple times and never received them, despite getting assurances from the server.
Fries: The salt-roasted fries were a bit dry, and the portions of sauce were way too small.
The Ahi Tuna Incident: This one's a biggie. My seared ahi tuna tasted off, and after two bites, I became violently ill (had to rush to the restroom to puke). The dish itself lacked flavor. It was not a great experience.
Overall:
This place had the potential to be a great spot for a group gathering. The appetizers were tasty, drinks were good, and the contactless ordering was a neat idea. However, the service issues and the unfortunate tuna incident really brought down the experience. If they can tighten up on service and ensure fresh seafood, I might consider giving Roger another shot, but for now, it's a...
Read moreI was staying at the Ameswell for a conference. I have some severe food allergies and struggle to eat at restaurants. I brought my own food for the conference, but could not bring enough for the whole trip. After receiving the wrong delivery service order, I went to the Roger Bar and Restaurant. I figured the cool atmosphere and great looking food would be a good idea. I sat at the bar, and the server was very nice when I stated I had allergies. They had me write them down and have the chef recommend options I could eat. This was greatly appreciated as I understand these allergies can be a burden for restaurants. I ordered the butter lettuce salad with chicken and avocado, letting them know I have a rice, dairy, yeast, and peanut allergy. I received the meal in a to go container and was very happy. That was until I saw that there was potentially black rice as the "crispy grain" on my salad. I was also labeled "allergy lady," and the server so happened to be "Karen B." I hope Karen B really does work there and isn't the name the servers use for customers they label as a "Karen." Allergy lady was alreading embarrassing enough. I realized the salad had the allergy after already entering my hotel room. I was told any allergies would be left off the dish and was now worried. These are not fake allergies for a fad diet, but actual allergies designated by a medical professional. I was very patient and appreciative of the staff. I gave a 22% tip because I found them so helpful. I was very disappointed after realizing the mistake in the food. The ambiance is nice, but paying over $33 for a salad to end up getting the allergies wrong was very...
Read moreThe worst New Year’s Eve dinner in my life! After 10 days traveling around California we only wanted to have a nice family dinner for New Year’s without getting out of the hotel, but after all the restaurants we have been to this one was definitely the worst experience. We got a super small table for my husband, our son, and I. My husband asked for a wine, but the waitress just came with an open bottle and placed it on the table. Instead of opening it in front of us, letting us taste it, and serving it, we had to do it all ourselves. When my husband asked about the menu they had for New Year’s the waitress didn’t even know how it worked and couldn’t explain it to us, so we just ordered a shrimp cocktail for an appetizer that we didn’t know would be just 3 shrimp with an spoon of tomato sauce, medium rare prime ribs, and some upside down cake for dessert. She never asked if we wanted any sides or something else with our steak, so our big surprise was two plates of just raw looking slices, no silverware, no extra plates, and no napkins. We had to ask someone else for these, so when the silverware came my stake was already cold. When the waitress finally came 10-15 minutes later where we finally got to ask and clarify about sides. The cherry on the cake was that the dessert never came and seemed like the waitress forgot about us, so we just decided to ask for the check, finish our bottle of wine and leave after paying $200 dollars for a horrible dinner. Overall, the restaurant is beautiful, the atmosphere was great, and they had life music, so that was all 10/10… but the food was mediocre and the...
