You're kidding?!? One of the best fried chicken joints in the Salt Lake City area is inside a gas station!?!
Not kidding, and 100% correct and true! Located inside the Speedway gas station / convenience store is Kevin's Chicken to Go. (Hence only 4 Atmosphere stars) While Speedway is open 24 hours, Kevin's is open weekdays 7am thru 4pm. I haven't experienced it myself, but I understand they may close earlier than 4pm if they run out of chicken.
Options are limited but all delicious, based on fried chicken tenders, fried chicken pieces (wing, leg, breast), potato logs (quarter- potato steak fries breaded in the same spices as the chicken) and Coca Cola soft drinks. Meals include potato logs and a beverage. Chicken Sandwich Chicken Sandwich meal Fried Chicken by the piece Two Piece Meal Three Piece Meal
I recommend the chicken sandwich with everything on it, but you can't go wrong with anything here. You can eat in at one of three tables, or they'll pack it to go.
I ate in this last time I visited, and watched throughout my meal as steady pace of people place orders to eat in, take on the road, or eat in their car in the parking lot. These were laborers and tradesmen who want a good meal, but need to budget time and money carefully. If that doesn't tell you it's both good and good value, I don't know...
Read moreI specifically seeked out this place because a local newspaper said that they had the best fried chicken in Salt Lake. Their hours have been sporadic. I was at this location multiple times before I finally found them open. When I did find them open, they didn't have any chicken pieces in their display case. I had to do with chicken fingers. They were meh at best. The second time I found them open I was able to buy a couple of legs and a couple of breasts and they were volcano hot. A good thing, has that meant they came straight out of the fryer. After they cooled off and I ate them, they were mediocre. Yesterday, I stopped by there and they only had four pieces of chicken in the display case. Nobody was behind the counter. I waited 10 minutes for somebody to come out. When I ask for a three-piece meal, Kevin said that they didn't have three pieces for the three-piece meal. I could only buy them a piece at a time. I said we'll have about that breast and a leg for a two-piece meal. He said. Oh no, it doesn't work that way. I have to charge more. The three-piece meal was in the $12 range. The two-piece meal was in the $11 range. He wanted to charge me $15 for a breast and a leg. No sides. I told him no, I wasn't interested, that he had lost a customer, and that I would...
Read moreI've been looking all over the SL Valley for good fast fried chicken, and this was not it. I should have followed my instincts as soon as I walked in and walked right out again. I wasn't put off by the fact that this place is located in a gas station convenience store - I've had some great things at truck stops all over the country - but the place was empty and dead and the chicken not far behind.
I ordered a family meal for $25 which was supposed to come with a variety of chicken, several sides, and four biscuits. I only received 1 side of potato salad (which was Reser's brand from Costco, I saw it being scooped out) and 1 biscuit. I felt cheated.
The chicken itself is ok, nothing great. It is super crispy which I like, but it was also really dry and old. It had clearly been sitting out all day (maybe from yesterday even). Not...
