Visits to GOTTs (Gary's Old Town Tavern)/Bray's are a necessity, each and every summer! There are many exceptional items on their menu - the lobster stew, the pulled pork, reubens, fish and chips, and the bruchetta to name a few. Many of their beers, brewed onsite by Bray's, are very good (my 2 favorites below*). They have a nice variety, which frequently changes what's on tap. They also have a large selection of bottled beers.
The first floor is a tavern. It's a nice atmosphere, with a cozy, wood interior, and has the feel of a small town, local bar decorated with tin signs, skiing memorabilia, and the like. The 1st floor has dining tables, but the bar takes up most of that floor. They also have live music in the evenings, and karaoke weekly,(also on the first floor). The biergarten, just outside the bar, is the perfect spot to enjoy a drink & summer evenings when waiting on a table. There's bar in the biergarten, with special drinks, as well as a designated (outdoor) smoking area. They have picnic tables, fire pits, corn hole, & horse shoe pits for summer fun. The biergarten is one of my favorite places to enjoy a cold beer and the mild Maine summer night's!
The upper floors offer quaint dining rooms, they're small, but allow for quiet, private dining, and parties larger than 4-6. The stairs are steep, but reminiscent of the old New England homes of that era. Given the two very different atmospheres, GOTTs offers a unique variety of dining options.
Gary's Old Town Tavern is a brewery that serves food. It IS NOT a family restaurant, (thus the word Tavern in the name).
There are times when the food and the service is better than others, which seem to relate directly to how busy the restaurant is. This is a very popular place, particularly during the summer tourist season; in turn, it gets very crowded at dinnertime. The food & service is best when they're not too busy. Since the change of ownership, they have struggled to work out the kinks. We have waited a long time some nights, while others we've been seated, and served promptly. The staff has always been very friendly, (particularly Jessica), no matter how busy they are. I'm hoping that once they are fully staffed, and have worked thru the ownership transition, things will return to the exceptional food and service which endeared us to Bray's in the first place.
Gary's will always be Bray's to us. We've dined there, for almost 20 years. During our annual summer vacation, we've enjoyed dinner & drinks there at least once a week, usually more. Over the years our family, and friends have spent many night's enjoying meals and music at Bray's. We've celebrated birthdays, enjoyed date nights, toasted summertime, and drove those to enjoy their milestone "first beer", for those now old enough to do so. No summer would be complete without at least one night at Bray's!
For us, Bray's/GOTT is a landmark and a place filled with history. Bray's is my first stop for food and drink when coming to town to open and/or close our family's summer home on (big) Sebago. My favorite order - a bowl of lobster stew, a plate of bruchetta, and either a Bray's Quaker Ridge Oatmeal Stout* or Pleasant Mountain Porter* on tap. It makes my mouth water just thinking of it!
GOTTs/Bray's is a typical New England tavern with a very special touch - there's always a drink poured in honor of those veterans who didn't make it home. Thank you for your continued respect & honor for our...
Read moreWaited over an hour to be seated at the bar. Clean empty tables noted. Finally asked if we were going to be seated and as soon as we did we were. I think they were trying to clear the place out some before they served any more customers for the kitchen and servers benefit -even with empty tables. Ordered a beer at the bar - once foam settled the glass was literally half empty. For $4.50. Finally got seated. Ordered appetizers and a main meal. Waited nearly an hour for the appetizers to arrive. Waitress was brusque and surly even before we said something about the wait for appetizers. Was told the place was full and there wasnt enough staff and they were doing the best they could. And told there was nothing they could do about the slowness of service. Waited another half hour for the main meal. Sandwiches were very small, coleslaw was so watery as to be almost soup consistency. The meal took over two hours to get for basically pub food that was mediocre at best. Save your pennies and find somewhere else to eat with better food and better service. At least if you have to wait over an hour it will have...
Read moreMy dinner experience at the tavern was not very positive. It was a very loud environment, the waitress came seated us got us our drinks we ordered soup and didn't see her for over 20 minutes. I had to ask another waitress to get her cuz I thought she lost us. she then came with the soup and said oh they had to make a new batch watch out it's piping hot. It was not piping hot it was lukewarm. The soup was good but not hot. We ordered and my meal was supposed to come with grilled french bread, I got to roll... With no butter I might add. When I asked the waitress about it she said oh I don't know I guess it's just some bread. I took a menu she happen to have in her hand and looked up what I ordered and it did specifically say grilled french bread. When I showed her that she said I don't think we have any french bread but we could grill a sub roll for you. I said nevermind. Not once did she come to the table and ask is how we enjoyed our meal if we needed anything. My friends country fried tips were dry and overcooked and he specifically asked if they could be medium well done. Not one of my better dinner...
