This was my first time trying Gio’s. I’m a true Chicago South Side born and raised girl. Been in Nashville for almost 2yrs, so needless to say, I’ve been missing me some Chicago style deep dish pizza. Greg the owner was fantastic! We chatted it up for a few, and he even reached out to me the next day to see what I thought. I told him I was gonna be honest, and give my honest opinion of what I thought. First let me start by saying for the size pizza I received, the price was definitely a plus! I would have paid at least $10 more for the same size back at home. So I was happy about that considering how expensive food can be down here. Now, let’s get to it. I’m a diehard Giordanos lover. So deep dish is my thing. Lou Malnati’s is a close second. I ordered a deep dish sausage pizza. I thought the crust could have been thicker, and buttery. The sauce wasn’t bad, although the sausage had a different flavor than what I’m accustomed to with Giordanos pizzas. I’m really picky about sausage, so it’s hard for me to give an unbiased opinion. I also thought the cheese wasn’t gooey enough if that makes any sense. I eat my deep dish with a fork and knife. When I cut, and stick my fork in, and lift I’m used to gooey cheese being pulled away from the plate. But like I said, I’m picky about my pizza. I’ve lived in Chicago my whole life so I can distinguish different pizzas with my eyes closed. But in comparison to other pizza that I have had since I’ve been here, Gio’s is by far better than those other pizza places, hands down! Now thin crust, I’m sorry, I’m a Home Run Inn girl till the day I die! No compromising there! LOL! Try Gio’s out, you won’t be...
Read moreA little history- we are an Italian family that grew up near Chicago in a little town that has a genuine Sicilian mom and pop pizzeria in that town. We got 2 pizzas from here, 1 tavern style- a thinner crust loaded pizza and Gio’s just about nailed it spot on. The flavor of the crust was a touch different but again I had this pizza 4 hours after it had been made. But it was very very good and very close to authentic as I’ve had down south. The other pizza was a deep dish Chicago style. Again great taste and flavor, Very close to a Gino’s east pizza from Chicago. Just a bit different but a good different. I’m a deep dish fan for sure. The only thing in my opinion if I could have changed was just a bit thinner crust across the bottom. The edge was thick as I was used to but the base crust was just a bit thick for me.
All around both were phenomenal pizzas and the guys here were super fantastic to my wife. They explained everything and showed here around and we’re just above and beyond nice. So from this out of place Chicagoan thank you for giving me a taste of home!! Well...
Read moreAs a born and raised South Sider (Bridgeport & Vittum Park), I was excited to try this pie. And to be clear, I don’t dabble in Giordano’s or Lou Malnati’s. Im all about the mom n pop places, nothing gets better. My fiancé and I ordered the large supreme extra cheese and a large just cheese, extra cheese pizzas.
The ingredients on the supreme were of quality, however, the interior piece of the pie was completely soggy. I’ve never had a pie this soggy where I literally could only eat the edges and throw the rest out.
The cheese pizza was okay, the crust was not my favorite from this joint. And the edges were a little dried out, but that’s subjective and I’m comparing mom n pop places back in Chi-city.
I think the owner was out of town that day or week so that may have been it. The reason for three stars is because of the sogginess so I had to dump money in the trash.
Also, if you’re in Chi, you know it’s true authenticity when you grab a pie to go from a place and it’s on cardboard wrapped in paper outlining Italy...
