Tonight on Kevin's Diner
You all may have been wondering how I maintain my fabulous physique and keep myself in top physical condition. The answer is barbecue and lot's of it!
Tonight our destination was Sugar Creek Barbecue in Nashville Indiana. This little restaurant is hidden back behind in a small strip mall in Sugar Creek Plaza. I'm guessing it's probably only known to the locals and they don't get many out of towners.
Indiana is not really known for it's barbecue history. When you think of good barbecue you think of Texas or St Louis or perhaps anywhere south of the Mason Dixon line. But let me tell you Chris the pit master at Sugar Creek Barbecue has it going on! He cooks it low and slow with only hickory and cherry wood.
Shannon ordered a half pound of brisket and a half pound of pulled pork with water to drink. I ordered the Old Man sandwich. The Old Man had smoked Kielbasa sausage smothered in melted queso, topped with a huge pile of pulled pork and a equally huge pile of beef brisket.
I really don't have words for how tender, juicy and flavorful these meats were. Believe me when I say, the flavor was so good you didn't need any barbecue sauce or any salt and pepper or any other condiment.
When I took that first bite it was like heaven on earth. I can imagine what Moses felt like when he raised his staff and parted the Red Sea.... with all the dramatic angelic music in the background. 🎶 🎵.. Shannon said it's a good thing we didn't know about this place earlier because we would have spent all our money here.
I'm upset that I didn't know how to get a 10% discount on our meal until it was too late. I guess if you place your order with your best Randy the Macho Man Savage voice imitation you get 10% off your bill.
OH YEAH!!!!! How cool is that.
The service was superb and we will definitely be back.
5 stars for the Sugar Creek Barbecue
Until next...
Read moreGreat location since there aren't a lot of restaurants between the north gate of the park and Columbus. The fried biscuits and apple butter alone were worth the stop! The apple butter is delicious and the fried biscuits reminded me of beignets. Unfortunately, their ribs aren't available until after 4 pm Fri-Sun, so we didn't get to try those. I ordered the sampler platter with sausage, pulled pork, and brisket. My sides were mac and cheese and green beans. My husband ordered the sampler with pulled pork and pulled chicken. His sides were coleslaw and mac and cheese. Neither of us cared for the mac and cheese, which tasted like it had a very large amount of artificial cheese in it. The green beans were good. Hubby didn't care for the slaw. The pulled pork was excellent. The sausage was good as well. The brisket was a little tougher than I like, but it was still very, very good. The chicken was dry. I can never understand why restaurants insist on using chicken breast since it is so dry. My husband partulicularly liked the sweet barbecue sauce and the apple butter. Their cornbread was good, and reminded me of Jiffy--sweet and moist. We finished with a slice of famous sweet pie, that was good, too. Overall, it was good, BUT i feel like it is unfair to fully judge them without tasting the ribs. The sides were disappointing, but the entrees overall, were good. We will be returning tomorrow to get a take out order of burnt ends bedore we drive back home. Hopefully, they have left over ribs from today. Edit 10/21/18 I just had the burnt ends! Moist, flavorful, and delicious. I will bump the review to 4 stars. We plan to eat here each time we camp at the park. Hopefully, we taste those ribs during...
Read moreMy wife and I arrived just before 4pm on a Thursday. They were not very busy so the wait staff was prompt and very friendly. I ordered a plate that included ribs and 2 other meats. I was immediately told that "we don't have ribs today". My wife had wanted ribs as well. She settled for rib tips. I got the brisket and smoked sausage. My sides were BBQ beans and slaw. They were out of mashed potatoes, potatoes salad and corn bread. I've read rave reviews, and I talked to several locals that really bragged on the brisket. Frankly, I was not impressed. It was fairly dry and not very warm at all. The smoked sausage was almost cold. The sausage had a very good flavor, I just wish it had been delivered warm. The beans were decent. The Cole slaw was probably the best item on the plate. It was very good. My wife enjoyed the sauce on the rib tips, but there again, the meat was on the dry side. She had the slaw and collard greens. The greens were a little more spicy then she likes and when the staff asked, and she told them that, they did offer another side free of charge. She got onion rings which we both thought were very good. Oh, I nearly forgot...we got the Mac and cheese bite appetizer. I thought they were awesome.
Maybe we caught them on a bad day. I was not happy that they didn't serve ribs, cornbread or mashed potatoes today. The brisket was frankly, below average, and only the Mac and cheese bites and the onion rings were served hot. Staff was pleasant and apologetic. The atmosphere was nice.
I'd like to see them succeed, but unless they improve their consistency, I'm not confident they will be here when we return to brown...
