This place is so awesome. Outside it just looks like a few sheds and a Stone building stuck together. But inside, it's just all kinds of history and It opened in 1889. All kinds of stuff on the walls, lots of autographs and such from people that have been there over the years. Our waitress was just absolutely super. Even though she claimed it was only her 2nd day, she had some real good knowledge. First, we ordered chicken fried shrooms. They came out fast and hot. Oh, they were good, they really were good. Then we each ordered an entree. She had the Thursday special Lesli's smothered chicken. She said the green beans were great. The potatoes probably were made with a cream instead of milk, she thought from the way they tasted.. and she just didn't like that. The cream gravy was very good and the chicken was good. It wasn't over the top or anything, so just a little disappointed. For me, I had the country fried steak fingers, and they came out just massive .... and they were really good, but I will tell you this. They were undercooked just a bit. They could have stayed a minute longer because some of the breading inside was bready they were not fully crisp it. Yeah, the flavor was great. They were very tender, and I loved the outer coating. But It just missed the mark by being undercooked. Mac and cheese. It was good, but it tasted just exactly like Kraft Mac and cheese, that's all right. I like it a lot, but they did charge a $1 extra to order that as a premium side. Then I ordered onion rings, and that was a $2 up charge, and They're huge, but you only get 5 of them, so I had 2 different upcharge. And did not really see the value. Then we were offered pie and such, and it looked great, but we were just full, I mean, there was more than enough food for both of us. Brought Home 2 of the giant fingers and half of the shrooms, and we're going to enjoy those heated up in the air fryer tomorrow. Overall, you can see, it's very good. Food could have been a little better, but there was nothing per se wrong with it. It was just a couple of things not to our liking, and by the way, you do get another upcharge. If you use a credit card, I understand that the credit card's charge with these businesses is a lot of money, but i'm just making you aware of that. If that's a problem, bring cash. There's also another side to it... back in the back. You go out through the restaurant section that we were eating in and straight out. That door is an incredible bar area outdoor area and dance hall. Lots of famous folks have played there. Lots more famous folks and will in the future. I'm sure very cool. Enjoy the pictures.... As always just my opinions and enjoy..

The Fat Man and his wife took a trip to Texas. Our first stop was at Freiheit Country Store in New Braunfels, Texas. Freiheit is a historic wood hut with a patio & live music, serving old-time burgers & fries with beers. We started our adventure with the Southwest Texas Egg Rolls. This dish is chicken egg rolls and chipotle ranch. The egg roll was crispy but not falling apart. The chicken is tender, and the black beans, corn, and peppers add flavor and a little texture, with spice on the back end. The cheese adds a gooey level and creaminess. The homemade ranch cut through the egg roll with saltiness and creaminess, but the chipotle kick in the sauce did not come through. My wife ordered The Kerry with bacon, cheddar cheese, Kerry sauce (BBQ and ranch), lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. The burger was cooked well with great flavor, and the veggies were plentiful, crispy, and fresh. The cheese melted well, thick cut, and offered a nice saltiness. The bacon was thick-cut and salty, but unfortunately, the Kerry sauce was in the background. It added creaminess and a little tang to the bite where it was found. The fries looked hand-cut and were seasoned well but tasted like they were a bit old and slightly stale. I ordered Vic’s Famous Freiheit Extreme with bacon and cheese, fully dressed in grilled onions, jalapenos, and mushrooms. This is a ½ pound burger served on a Hawaiian bun. The bun is soft and sweet. It cuts through the bacon, which is a salty and thick cut. The cheese was sharp and salty. The veggies are fresh and plentiful. The grilled onions offer sweetness and char. The mushrooms provide a slight chew. The jalapeno was lost and didn’t have much kick. The burger was juicy, flame-kissed on a grill, and had a subtle but good taste. The onion rings were large, not overbreaded, and had an excellent crunch, while the onion did not pull out and offered texture. Freiheit Country Store’s menu includes burgers, starters, entrees, salads, wraps, and other sandwiches. They offer beer on tap, bottles, cans, and a full bar. The wait staff was amicable. The Fat Man says that Freiheit Country Store is Fat Man Approved with 2 chins.

New to the area, live right around the corner & have been considering a trip for some time. I don’t ever leave my house without thoroughly researching the place I’m going & NOWHERE does it mention, anywhere on the internet that you will be subjected to drunk patrons, screaming children & incredibly loud & obnoxious live music, if you want food at this establishment. After trying 3 different doors to enter the “restaurant”, I was directed by other Patrons to order food at the bar. After a 10 min wait to even speak with any staff, the woman taking my order looked at me like I had 3 heads, when I asked if there was any way to order food either online or by calling ahead & just pointed at the building (I had just tried to enter 3TIMES)… I explained that I tried all the doors leading from the parking lot AND there is no signage anywhere, to direct anyone & she laughed it off saying “yep everyone does things differently, go through the bathrooms next time!” Excuse me… wut??? The bathrooms that I keep watching wasted kids fight to get inside of?… I guess if you haven’t already been to this establishment & know your way around, or if you’re not a regular, be prepared to be treated like trash. Did I mention you’ve gotta trek through the mud for this experience, as well? I watched 7 people trip on the uneven, wet, boards of the haphazard ramp between the buildings while I waited an additional 22 minutes for my single appetizer… if you are disabled or have mobility difficulties, don’t even bother trying to navigate this terrain. The overly-greasy, unseasoned, rubbery mushrooms weren’t worth dealing with ANY of that- complete waste of money & perhaps the WORST restaurant experience I’ve had. TLDR; if you’re not a drunk hick, you will HATE this environment! UPDATE: nearly half of my fried mushroom basket is over fried pieces of batter or fried pickles… so the food is actually terrible. The other reviews mention inexperienced kids cooking, that checks out based on my experience. I’d give negative stars if I could!

First time here. Entrance was hard to find with all the cars and music and ppl but we made it. Cute country style and our server was super sweet! I will say, the weekend crew in the kitchen were using their phones, takin videos and eating while everyone’s waiting for their food, which did take bout 20 min for onion rings, they are tasty and our entree options came out quickly after onion rings, so we didn’t get to enjoy the onion rings fully so we boxed them. I ordered tenders fries and green beans. Tenders are lacking seasoning, on the chicken as well as the crust. Green beans are good and fries were delicious. Bf got the mushroom burger with grilled onions (it’s their famous burger minus the jalapeños) it was delicious :) dessert we wanted pie but they didn’t have any :/ so we settled for icecream. Overall, we’ll be back, just would be nice if the kitchen staff were a lil more professional, our server was very on point but some of the other servers were also cursing out loud, laughing and talking during their side work, I guess forgetting that there’s still customers inside. Other then that it’s a lovely spot nice and rustic but I’ll def be ordering a burger no matter what, from now on :) I loved my bf burger more then my food lol doesn’t happen often!

We stopped at this place the last 3 years while passing through on the way to South Padre. My review for the past 2 years was glowing and most complimentary. This time my friend and just looked at each other in surprise and said, "what's happened here"? We stay in a hotel right beside it and walk over and have looked forward to it for a year. Sadly something was amiss this year. The fried mushrooms were tough and rubbery, the fresh cut fries that were perfect in the past were soggy and tasted like the grease hadn't been changed in the frier for a while. The burger was bland and both our buns seemed stale and tough. Of the 3 things we had none were nearly on par with my previous 2 visits. Now I understand during this pandemic, the turnover of product is not as frequent and it may be harder to keep things fresh and ready while crowds are diminished. On the upside our waitress was very nice and the band in the back was good and the environment is unique and laid back. This is a great place and I hope they were just off their game tonight. It's far too cool of a place to fail and close. We'll give it one more try before we explore the many other options in this area..
