On Monday, December 27th, 2021, my family craved for Peruvian food. Before my family take the train to head up to NYC, we all decided to give it a try to Sabor Peru restaurant in New Haven. As Peruvian myself, we have eaten at different restaurant venues in CT, NJ and NY. However, this was the worst experience in my (ours) life. The server was quite attentive and respectful at all times. However, the food was “Over” priced, the portions were so tiny that we all laughed when the Jalea, salchipapa, and lomo saltado was dropped in our table. Unbelievable, 2 tiny shrimps, 1 micro fish fillet and 2 pieces of cassava (ridiculous). My mother demanded to talk to the owner/manager. A mature old guy approached to our table and with a pervasive attitude asked what was the issue. He said that his dishes are all served the same amount and he thanked god that his restaurant was busy everyday. In fact, we were the only guests sitting in the restaurant at that time. In addition, he said that the cost of the seafood increased and that was the reason he served small portions. His responses did not response my mother’s question nor did make us feel welcome or relieved. Never ever coming back to this restaurant. My sister, who is a teacher and PhD student and his fiancé who is a college student were very disappointed. Do not waste your time and money at this restaurant. Nunca vayan a comer a este restaurante. Es ridículamente caro, sirven porciones pequeñas y el dueño es un...
Read moreThis place is great! My husband and I went late on a Friday night and it wasn't too crowded. We didn't know anything about Peruvian food and were looking forward to trying some new dishes. Our server, Jerusalem, was fabulous and was happy to describe dishes and make recommendations. Everything was delicious. There were definitely ingredients and combinations I was unfamiliar with, but I found several new-to-me foods to enjoy!
We ate the yuca a la huancaina, the ceviche de camarones, and the vegetarian tallarin (noodles with a Peruvian pesto-like sauce). I tried the chicha, which is a sweet purple corn drink spiced with cinnamon. I haven't had anything else quite like it, and highly recommend it. My husband had the fresh mango juice which was also quite good. For dessert, we had lucuma ice cream (pictured) and churros. Lucuma is a fruit that tastes like coffee and butterscotch, so it works very well in an ice cream! And the churros were perfectly fried and sweet.
We are very much looking forward to...
Read moreFirst time here with the husband for our first Peruvian food experience and O M G! We are in love! Cannot believe we didn't try Peruvian food sooner!!! The Ceviche Mixto was delicious! Very fresh. The Combinado: tripe and heart skewer was PHENOMENON! Didn't know tripe and heart could taste soooo good, so tender and juicy. The Lomo Saltado (chunks of beef with onions, tomatoes and fries with white rice) was very tasty. The sauce was on point. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place. Our waitress was very attentive and super helpful for our first time. The place is nice and clean. Bathroom was very clean as well. Will definitely be coming...
