I'll preface this by saying I'm from New England, so when I saw this was a Boston fish house, I was highly skeptical. 😉
I arrived in a rainstorm, so there was not a long, long line to get in, but still fairly crowded- so sat at the bar. The atmosphere reminds me of New England- red shingled exterior, layout what you would see in the northeast. Inside was more fast food, diner style downstairs, with a bar. The place was clean, staff attentive.
Wait time was relatively short, and I wanted to see if the clam chowder was all it was cracked up to be! I ordered a bowl, which came out fairly quick. Serving size was about 2 pints, served with oyster crackers. I was completely surprised how good this was- it was classic new England clam chowder, smooth, flavorful. I'd rate this a strong 9/10- I don't care for celery in mine and the potatoes were not quite 100% cooked... but they honestly were close enough- the taste was surprisingly fantastic. I'd have it again and brag to the locals it is similar to actual Boston clam chowder. Totally worth the $10.95 a bowl, which I thought was reasonable.
I ordered my favorite fresh caught fish, baked haddock, with a choice of the 2 sides it came with- coleslaw and mashed potatoes + gravy. They were out of mashed so I got sweet potato fries instead.
The main dish came pretty timely, hot, clearly fresh out of the oven. Right away I noticed the serving of fish was quite small, it was barely a 12 oz filet serving, baked and had ritz crumbs on top. The sweet potato fries were steak style, large portion, coleslaw was small ramekin size portion.
Coleslaw tasted good, a little above room temperature. I prefer it colder but the taste was actually good. Sweet potato fries were cooked well, right temperature and texture and serving was bigger than expected.
I thought the haddock was cooked well, but it wasn't the best I've had. It was baked firm, light and fluffy, but the ritz topping didn't go well with it- there was nothing to really blend it well so it was rather dry. 6-8 bites did it in 😉 For a $28 dish, I didn't feel it was worth the value, it was disappointingly average. 6/10..generously.
Staff and service were good, no one really chatted- although server did ask if everything was OK, and if I wanted dessert. Full by then, I decline, tipped well for good service and left. I would have liked a more welcoming, conversational meal but they were also steady, so were busy but no one seemed really happy to be working. Maybe a rough day today, so we'll come back another time to see.
I did notice some other patrons who seemed to like their meal- I'll try this place once more before final decision on if this is a truly great fish house. The verdict is still out on this one, but I'll give it a 4 🌟 rating this round- I'm full, content and it was a decent...
Read moreWe had lunch here on a Saturday between Christmas and the New Year. Tiffany was our server and a hard working server she is! She was the best of all servers in that she knew the menu, was not intrusive, but was attentive. We'll be sure to ask for her again when we return. Our lunch was delicious. The seafood selections were cooked perfectly and not overcooked. I had cajun broil and my wife had fried haddock. My dinner (mate's portion) came with a side of onion rings, French fries and a choice of fried whole belly clams, clam strips or oysters (to go along with the haddock, scallops and shrimp). I chose the whole belly clams. EVERYTHING was friend perfectly without one speck of greasiness or oiliness. That's quite an accomplishment and our compliments to the person in the kitchen who knows how to fry! The Boston baked beans were authentic and the coleslaw was very nice and refreshing. We didn't try dessert but did love the look of the Boston Cream Pie! My wife had a sauvignon blanc that was quite nice and I had a very good (not bitter, cloudy or off tasting) unsweetened iced tea. If you want an extensive menu with beautifully prepared seafood, this is the place! See you soon! EDIT: We returned for dinner recently. The food was as delicious this time as previously. When compared with another local restaurant that is "highly recommended," we'll stick with Boston Fish House, thanks! Hot food, prepared beautifully with excellent service. You will not be disappointed in...
Read moreOur favorite seafood restaurant in New Smyrna Beach! This is our second vacation here, and I must admit that we did not stop at Boston's Fish House on our first trip. The prominent location made it look like too much of a "tourist" restaurant. Were we wrong. Last night, we arrived and were offered either a short wait to eat inside or an outside table right away. Our professional and friendly waitress, Grisha, took our order but advised us that their computers were glitchy that night, and apparently, that caused a delay in our order making it to the kitchen. Grisha assured us that the management was going to do something nice for us. If she had not told us about the delay, I'm not sure that we would have been aware. The crabcake appetizer was the best we have ever had. The haddock filet and the Seafood combination dinner were excellent quality. The scallops were sweet and buttery, and the clam strips were the most tender I have ever had, not to mention the crispy delicious onion rings. It was a perfectly enjoyable experience. Imagine our surprise when Grisha informed us that the management would not charge us for the entire meal, including drinks, due to the delay in getting our meals. I have never eaten anywhere where the management cared so much about the customer's dining experience. The fish is flown in fresh every day, and the preparation is wonderful! We will most certainly be back. Do not miss this wonderful restaurant when visiting New...
