I kept giving it the benefit of the doubt - not anymore. Stopped going here a long time ago. The building is NASTY. The floors are never clean, and the bathroom is disgraceful. Never clean everytime I went in there. Always saw multiple bugs crawling all over the place. Went to the bathroom, and once again, I see a dead roach in the corner. Five days later I come back because I'm hungry, and it's literally STILL there. You practically have to ask them to clean things. The pieces of their old dirty mop stays there on the floor for days. The food portions are small and, as expected, things are very overpriced. When they painted the walls dark, the originally bright place turned very unsettling for me.
What really made me stop going is when they didn't even care to defend me when I was being harassed by two girls in front of me. Even though they know I'm a good person in their establishment for over TEN YEARS, saw the whole thing go down and everything, and yet they STILL took the girls' side when I was the victim trying to have a quiet meal. I know we're all walking money signs, but they could've at least kicked them out and actually DID something instead of just STANDING THERE watching me defend myself and my mother against these two girls!! They do nothing about these things. Not to mention, the nasty attitudes from some employees and the things going on behind closed doors. One time, an employee and her children (they were doing homework) was literally SCREAMING while everyone was trying to eat. She would be (verbally) abusing her kids in front of customers. Tone it, we're trying to eat.
A friend went here today, and she said they were "cleaning" her table with dirty black rags.
I went here for years and years, and I miss the way it was before. It was much cleaner, the food was better, and they were kinder people.
Don't go here if you want a calm time. At least until it's back to the way it used to be, which will definitely...
Read moreFrom the photos online and the general quality of sushi in the East Bay, I can't say my hopes were all too high for Wakamatsu. But I just finished my meal and I am very happy. I placed a takeout order while at school and by the time I got there my meal was ready (~10 minutes).
I got a large Chirashi for $17 and it was extremely interesting. I've eaten a lot of sushi. Like a LOT. And usually it's pretty easy to at least kind of figure out how good the fish quality is by texture and taste. Here's the thing with Wakamatsu, the texture could use some work. Tamago was soggy. The rice they use has semi-tough kernels in it (like old rice but not as bad) surrounded by rice that was too wet. (it seemed like it wasn't cooled down properly). The top layer of the sashimi is too soft (usually a sign of not great fish) and generally limp.
Despite the iffy textures, everything about the flavors was good to great. Rice was very well seasoned (if you prefer a stronger vinegar flavor, Wakamatsu has you covered) and despite being overcooked it wasn't too dense and had a nice stickiness to it. The chirashi came with a typical selection and even included some less typical choices like halibut and kanpachi. The fish slices are a bit large but thin (which is a good thing, I'm sick of the "giant-chunk-of fish" bang for your buck trend). Usually bad sashimi is soft and flavorless or overly fishy. The fish here retained flavor without the fishy taste.
In the end, the textures weren't the worse and the fish quality was much better than I anticipated. To top it all off the mom/pop of the store were super nice. The sushi chef was adorable and greeted me with the cutest smile and wave. Overall, I really like this place and I will...
Read moreI've ordered here two days in a row, the first day delivery was about fifteen minutes late. (A futomaki, a lion special roll, egg and chicken over rice dish, chicken katsu dinner, and egg fried rice). Not too big a deal, they could have been busy. I made it a habit to wait at the door so the delivery guy couldn't be missed. He did not seemed pleased by my greeting, maybe he had a bad day, but not coming up the steps to hand me the food was totally off. I almost tipped over the steps. I told him thanks, but he just left. He acted like I begged for the food and I should be grateful. It was an off experience, but the food was pretty good, and I was willing to give it another chance. The following day I made another order with them. (6futo maki, chicken katsu, and egg fried rice). It had been raining and was twenty minutes passed the delivery time. I figured perhaps they wanted to wait til the rain died down to make the delivery. That would have been understandable, it was raining a bit hard. 45 mins passed, the rain had calmed, still nothing. Decided to check up on our order after an hour only to be told that it had been delivered. Uh, no? Turns out that the guy gave our food to someone else, because he didn't check the paper. We waited over 2 hours for food. The person on the phone claimed that it was my fault for "calling now" and not earlier. Apparently it was my fault to not assume the worst. Our children were starving. There were no apologies issued, just "we'll make it again and send it". We asked for a refund and ordered elsewhere. We were...
