This incident happened on Sunday 8/24/25 @ 1:30 PM . The “SALE” posted by the store caught my attention as I was on my way to 12:30 PM Sunday Service in a church in Maspeth. Right after the Sunday service, I immediately booked a ride to Da -Bar Shoes . I really was amazed by the variety of their shoes but somewhat disappointed with their mark down price which to my opinion is still higher than what I saw in the mall & online. I made a comment that a certain brand “ Patrizia” is one of my favorites as they are stylish . I even bragged that I was able to buy a pair on sale on Amazon. At this juncture, the tall guy who I presume was the owner of the store , reacted to my comment and with a stern voice , threw me a “challenge” : to go find online similar white shoes I was holding & if it costs cheaper than his store price, he will give the white shoes “free”
I was somewhat perplexed by the unfriendly tone of his voice & the look in his eyes which to me , (an 80 year old retired Special Education teacher & master of “ body language” ), was a red flag . I took the challenge seriously so I started my goggle session on my iphone even though I just had a cataract procedure & my eyes are still adjusting to the light. It took me time to browse. After a few minutes , this presumably owner asked if I am making a purchase or not because he wants me to leave if I won’t . I felt discriminated when he insisted I should get out of his store just because he can not have business with me. I tried to explain that I like a certain white sandal on display but they don’t have my size. He just dismissed my explanation & the verbal abuse escalated . When I reminded him that a customer has the right to decide when to leave & not be verbally let out of the store, this huge guy took my belongings ( coat, cane , bottled water & church bulletin ) & placed them on a chair outside the store. At that shocking moment I really felt humiliated & verbally abused as an elderly citizen of this country. I tried to analyzed the unusual behavior of this particular store owner & came to my own opinion that he must have not made a single sale that time of the day or he must be a racist because I am not white . I’m Asian & white -haired old woman with mobility issue. Note: There were two lady sales personnel who witnessed the aforementioned argument from start to finish . I appreciate one of them who helped me book an Uber ride home because I was trembling with fear . The first time in my life to encounter a belligerent store owner...
Read moreHad to bring my child here to get school uniform sneakers. Now I know I don't have to come here and I won't ever again because they are a rip-off. Paid so much money for a pair of plain white sneakers for my toddler who got them dirty within the first two months of school and they cannot get back to their white color. Next time I just go to WalMart! Then at least I could just go and buy another pair and not worry about spending so much money. Another thing, they sold me White socks for my daughter to wear and it ended up being boys socks in the wrong size. I've looked in there on other occasions because in the window they had some cute baby girl and toddler girl sandals and dress shoes and Ugg boots but as I said before, they are extremely overpriced and when you're buying for a baby and a toddler you know that they outgrow something within 6 months so why would we want to spend $40-$50 on a pair of...
Read moreDa-Bar Shoes is a nice, old fashioned neighborhood shoe store. The kind that you just don’t see anymore. I wear a size 12 X-wide width, so it’s hard for me to find good fitting shoes. In the last two months, I have gone there first to buy dress shoes to wear with a tux for my son’s wedding. And then yesterday to buy Winter boots. Both times I was helped by the same woman (I wish I knew her name) who did her best to make sure I was satisfied. If you live in or near the Maspeth area, and you’re looking for a good quality shoe store, then I suggest you try...
