Elmhurst Park – A Hidden Urban Gem in Queens I recently discovered Elmhurst Park in Queens—just steps away from the 7‑train’s “Elmhurst Ave” stop—and it’s a refreshing oasis in the midst of city life. From the moment I enter, the park’s thoughtful layout, lush greenery, and community-friendly atmosphere make it feel like a well-kept secret worth sharing.
📌 Location & Access Elmhurst Park is easy to reach via NYC Transit. If you’re coming by train, it’s a 2‑minute walk from the 7‑train at Elmhurst Avenue. There are also several nearby bus routes (Q29, Q38, Bx15) if you prefer to avoid the subway.
🌿 Ambience & Landscaping The landscaping is top-notch—old‑growth trees, manicured lawns, and vibrant seasonal flower beds create a warm, inviting atmosphere. I love how the park blends natural elements with modern design: curved walking paths, picnic tables, and benches shaded beneath mature trees offer spots for relaxation and reflection.
Amenities & Features • Playground: A well‑designed play area for kids, complete with swings, climbing structures, and safety surfacing. • Dog Run: A separate, gated space for dogs to roam and socialize—spotless and popular among local pet owners. • Public Restrooms: Clean, maintained regularly (major plus in urban parks!). • Seating & Shade: Plenty of benches, shaded areas, and gathering tables perfect for a snack or picnic. • Water Features: Fountains and a small reflecting pond (seasonally active) enhance the peaceful vibe.
Photo Spots • Early morning sunlight shines through the tall trees—ideal for dramatic portraits or nature shots. • The manicured lawns and flower beds make for colorful, Instagram‑worthy backdrops. • From the higher ground near Center St., you get sweeping views of the park and surrounding neighborhood.
Ideal For: • Families with kids – Safe, clean playground and spacious lawns for running around. • Pet owners – Clean and well‑managed dog run. • Nature lovers & photographers – Lovely greenery and changing seasonal foliage without trekking to Brooklyn or Manhattan. • Local residents – Close knit community feel; perfect for a morning walk, afternoon read, or weekend stroll.
Parking & Transit Tips Transit is easiest—subway is steps away. Street parking exists but gets filled on weekends. If traveling by car, arrive early to spot a space on nearby residential streets.
Best Times to Visit • Early mornings (6–9 AM): Quiet, peaceful, great lighting for photos. • Late afternoons (4–6 PM): Families and dog walkers arrive, but still plenty of space. • Weekends: Crowded around popular spots—arrive before noon to enjoy serenity.
Insider Tips • Bring a blanket and sunny‑side lunch in spring and summer to picnic on the lawns. • In autumn, the trees’ changing colors make for beautiful fall scenery. • The water features switch on in late spring—check the park’s NYC Parks website for activation dates.
Nearby Highlights After exploring the park, head to nearby eateries along Broadway in Elmhurst: authentic dim sum, Chinese food, and Filipino desserts await within a 5‑minute stroll. Perfect way to extend your outing!

Read moreMe & My Dog’s favorite park in the neighborhood. I’m so glad they made this beautiful park for the neighborhood - it was needed and you can really see how vital it was to have such a space all along every time you see all the different people, cultures, kids, etc enjoying this space.
This park used to be a waste of space with weird gasoline towers that kids used to sneak into and play around. Not sure it was entirely safe and also sketchy.
With that said, I think this park is impressively well maintained and really clean compared to many other Parks in and around the boroughs. It’s a highly trafficked park, especially on the weekends, but somehow it is maintained and pretty clean. I think it’s the combination of the maintenance staff being so meticulous🙏 and the neighbors who really appreciate this space and use it responsibly.
Love the trees, my dog loves the giant hill, love the ballroom dancing that happens everyday by the playground, the trees :)
This has been an excellent addition to Elmhurst. If I had any criticism, 4 stars because the bottom of the hill tends to get MUDDY and mushy after rainfall but not a deal breaker. Just poor...
Read moreThe asians at the park act like they own the place and show complete disregard for the rules. New york city's quiet hours are before 9am on weekdays and before 10am on weekends, they blast loud chinese hip hop every single morning starting at 7, and they also do it again at night from 7:30pm to 9:00pm, not to mention you cant even get a permit to play amplified sound in NYC if your within 500 feet of a school, and they are. Kids smoke pot right behind the park enforcement shack, and drugs are done in the bathroom, where are the park enforcement workers? There are none in there and the park number redirects you to 311, this park is only worth going to around 12-6. Any time after that and you will smell pot smoke or have your ear blown out by loud, obnoxious music. I've actually talked to the group responsible for the noise and they lowered the music for about 2 days and that was that. This park is awful for the people who live near...
