La Fontana — Restaurant in New York

I really wanted to like this place as so many people recommend it & it's very convenient to my new work location. Unfortunately, I was largely underwhelmed and significantly over-charged, I feel, for a so-so dining experience. I went with my husband & business partner. We were seated right away & the young server assistant was super friendly and attentive, 5 stars for him! The bread they served at lunch was meh. Like a Wawa roll or something. Nothing close to impressive. The butter was the tiny, disposable kind. Now I'm unusual in how much I try to avoid disposable items, but for a "nice" restaurant, I expect a good, high-end piece of bread with a good amount of creamy butter, not teeny, tiny plastic-served butter. Never mind no olive oil or balsamic vinegar. I thought the lunch menu was expensive for what we received: $18 for 2 small chicken parm pieces and a tiny portion of penne pasta. The salad was small as well with not much going for it beyond a little spring mix with 2 grape tomatoes, 2 small black olives & 2 chickpeas. The penne pasta was cold. The chicken was tough. My husband's sole fish was the special. It was also a small portion and he said it was, "okay" for ~$20. Our colleague's tortellini was equally unremarkable for $18. Great southern Italian food. Garlic bread best I've ever had seriously. Crunchy butter garlic cheesy flavor. Chicken parm gud bolenese was more meat sauce no creme or wine. Salad excellent. Chicken cacciatore huge for three sauce was great needs more peppers and mushrooms . Calamari was gud .soft I like mine crunchy. No pizza no lasagna. ???? Lots of other choices marsala pizzolia puttenesca picata everything. It's a fine dining place pasta comes with but no salad included. Service excellent excellent waiter. Menu knowledgeable and patient we were new. They have a special all inclusive couple of courses it's great value. I think competition is fierce in St island came from NJ we have great Italian food too but this is rated high on Google definitely go back. Worth every penny . We were a large party celebrating a birthday in a private room. It took roughly 30 minutes to get bread, 4p minutes to get drinks. Appetizers, an hour. Drink refills were impossible and food was cold. The waiter seldom checked on us. I had fod that wad apparently sitting in the heated window of kitchen that sat a long time and got dried out. When it came time for the cake, the waiter hacked it to pieces, was falling on the floor, and left a butchered unrecognizable mound behind. We were there for nearly 3 1/2 hours. We Coughlin wait to leave. Horrible, horrible experience. My husband and I used to go there 12 years ago and it was our favorite restaurant! We even had our small wedding there!
