Roy's Fish Fry — Restaurant in Newark

This is probably the most unprofessional eatery I've ever encountered. First I called to make sure they were opened since most soul food establishments in the area are closed on Monday and they were open and said they had what I wanted. I come there and as soon as I walk in there was no greeting but a hostile worker arguing with a customer. I figure she must be a family member because you cant be this incompetent and rude and not have some type of connection. I was able to interject myself into their bickering to inquire about the prices. The employee pushed a menu in front of me while still arguing. By the way the whole time I was there she didn't stop arguing until the customer left and always had an attitude like I was inconveniencing her by asking questions. I already looked at the menu and the food they had on display wasn't even on the menu so it was ridiculous that she gave me a menu in which I already looked at that didn't have prices on it to even answer my question. So I literally had to ask several times about the price because her attention was divided between me and this other guy who warned me I should go elsewhere to eat. She seemed to be confused about the prices because the items are sold separately and not as a dinner. I kept waiting for her to stop arguing and be attentive to my one question that took over five minutes to answer. I stupidly still ended up ordering from there and then after I paid they told me they didn't have an item even though I called beforehand and placed the order in person and she said she had it and all of a sudden they were just wrong. I don't understand how you don't checked that when I've asked several times and paid. Besides the horrific service the food was at best mediocre! All that nonsense and trouble for thin tiny fish, too much nutmeg on the yams, lackluster potato salad and mac and cheese. Its mind boggling how you can have atrocious service with mediocre food in a price range that is above the quality. I wholeheartedly think this place should be avoided and if you want good fish and good sides go to Williams Street Fish Market in East Orange or Kings Family...

I ordered early in the day around noon and ordered through a delivery service. I was not happy. I have had a lot of tilapia and the fish I received didn’t have the taste or texture of tilapia. It was heavy and meatier like a cod or haddock,even the size and shape of the filet was different. Freshly fried tilapia is flaky and light and light and flaky this fish was not. It wasn’t hot out the fryer fresh- which was disappointing for the price but overall, the taste was okay. The sides I chose were the green beans and Mac n cheese. The beans were ok. Needed salt and better seasoning maybe some garlic or onions? but they weren’t terrible. The Mac-n-cheese- where do I start? It was literally macaroni with gobs of cheddar cheese and some type of seasoning. It had a smell that is not how Mac-n-cheese should smell so I’m attributing this to whatever seasoning was used. It was a large stuck together wad of food. I tossed it out. It didn’t look or smell appealing. I could tell that it was not made with a roux or any type of mixture other than cheese. First of all the Customer Service sucks. The women all have attitudes. From the cashier on back. They cut too many corners for me. I ask for a oxtail dinner with mac and cheese with yams. I see the lady putting a triple pile of mac and cheese in the platter (meat area) so I'm saying to myself somebody getting a platter of just mac and cheese. Then she adds gravy to the mac and cheese. It was soaking wet. I'm like yuck. She said oh this is your plate. I'm like no it's not because I asked for a meal. So back and forth we go. Then she adds the oxtails in the corner compartment area. Where the sides should go. I asked her why was she doing that and she said her boss told her to make all of the plates like that. So I won't be going back. And if I do it will be on somebody else's time and dime. Support the neighborhood business my A$$. This place can hang it up. I know I'm only 1 person but I'm sure others have had issues...
