I’ll start off by saying I’m admittedly biased. Both previous owners, Tony and Sal were family friends and when they needed to use the rest room they would run across the street into my moms apartment (my mom worked in the truck for over a decade). I grew up on these dogs and never paid a dime for one lol. Tony would give me 3 dogs and a yahoo every day he was working after I came home from Saint Michaels elementary. Sal would just give me a ginger ale 🤷🏽♂️ Now things may have changed being I haven’t been in NJ for about 11 years but this is what I remember. The chili is homemade as well as the onions and I believe my mom is only a handful of people on the planet with the actual recipe. The onions are also home made and very spicy but if you hit ‘em with just the right amount of ketchup it takes the sting away and the flavor is allowed to shine through the heat (pick yahoo for your drink it’ll help ease the burn). The dogs have that good ‘ol snap to em so they bring texture to the flavor and balance the fluffiness of the bun which surprisingly handles a variety of toppings very well. The sausage dogs get cut down the middle when served so they better deliver the toppings of your choosing, think of it as a meat tortilla 🤔 yes, delicious. Fear not dog lovers the sausage has an even more noticeable snap than the dog so the flavor symphony goes on with no interruptions, that is unless one of the Newark pigeons, who may have gang affiliations mistakes your black jansport book bag for a toilet,I believe the year was 1998 because big pun just released his first master piece. If you have a sensitive stomach then the Chili, cheese, onions, mustard, and ketchup is the capital punishment you crave, see what I did there? I couldn’t help myself 🤦🏽♂️.
I have not one negative thing to say about this fine establishment. My only hope is that it continues to provide great memories for little boys and girls in a city that can easily decide to drag ‘em into peril. This is more than a grease truck to many residents, it’s a visual beacon that flashes childhood memories before your eyes. It’s a mobile landmark you Hope appears before your appetite does. It’s a sign that Newark can and still provide a wealth of happiness when given a chance to slip away from the grips of poverty that’s been holding her down for so long. I write this while my two young boys are sound asleep (14 months and 1 month) I can’t wait to take ‘em...
Read moreWanted to compare some local trucks so I grabbed some dogs from Tony's. First thing was they had the Manhattan Special soda. I love that stuff so I was pumped. Nice kick from these onions but I will say in the Newark area I had other onions I preferred more. Won't say from where, don't want to pit one against another...plus now you have to go looking for them and give these trucks some business ;)
The chili cheese dog was solid, really enjoyed that one. There is another truck (different one than earlier) who I feel has better chili, but this was a winner anyway. I'd definitely grab a...
Read more8/13/2023 My wife and I were in Newark today and decided to go here after I received my order I was sitting in the car watching the man preparing peoples food with only one glove on not only that he was handing money with the gloved hand. How hard is it to at least try and be a little clean and sanitary. Or maybe consider having 2 people on the truck at all times one to prepare food and the other to collect money only. And to finish off this review let’s just say it’s not the same as it was years ago. If you plan to visit DONT be afraid to ask them to...
