Food allergen Violation being sent to USDA and FDA after many attempts to contact to discuss.
We have given them more then enough time to address a very serious issue associated with a food allergen, yet no one seems to care, so I’ll call it out publicly.
Mothers Day experience completely ruined and a literal near death experience!!
We noted to the waiter upon ordering that there was a nut allergy at the table. The waiter (John) was initially attentive but then quickly became overwhelmed and only saw him two times over a 1.5 hour period. He seemingly noted the allergy, but completely missed the mark.
After noting there was a very serious nut allergy and specifically requesting a salad come without nuts, I proceeded to order the Mahi Mahi. Neither the menu nor the waiter indicated there were nuts in the dish. After 8-9 bites, I began to feel ill and flagged down another waiter who confirmed there were pistachios in the dish. We promptly ordered something else via the other waiter, but continued to feel ill throughout the experience.
John finally appeared towards the end of our dining experience and brought us brownies. My mother asked if there were nuts in that dish, to which he said “I’m not sure, let me check”. John came back 7-10 minutes later indicating there were nuts in the dish he just tried to serve us again.
Absolutely beyond belief that a restaurant didn’t post a major food allergen on the menu, served a food allergen to a customer who clearly indicated they were deathly allergic and then proceeded to send the table another item with the same type of allergen in it.
I had to administer an emergency epi pen on the way home and spent time at Hoag. Great way to spend the day with my Mom, wife and kids after dropping $500+ on a meal none of us could enjoy.
After calling the following Monday and asking to speak to a manager, Izzy said she would have someone call me back. That didn’t happen, so I called and spoke to a different person who said he would have the GM (Rochelle) call me by Wednesday. I indicated I didn’t want to make a big deal while at the restaurant to avoid an unpleasant experience for others and have tried to resolve this privately, only to be completely ignored and avoided. The GM never called me and here we are a week after a near death experience and nothing. I called back yesterday and again spoke with Izzy who said she’d have Rochelle call me back right away but again, that never happened.
The flagrant violation of the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) has been escalated to local officials and an attorney.
I am dumbfounded that an establishment of this “caliber” could be so inept and inattentive to something so serious. Just absolutely...
Read moreI really wanted to like this restaurant. This restaurant was recommended both on Yelp and OpenTable, so I thought it would be a great place to try for a belated Valentine's day dinner. Sadly, this was nothing but an expensive disappointment.
First, lets start with service. I had a reservation for 6 pm and we got seated at about 6:20 pm. Not the end of the world, but a little annoying. Then, the server came to take our order. She was nice enough and gave some good wine recommendations. After receiving our food (approximately 7:15 pm), she did not visit us until we were almost finished with our meal - this was a bummer because the food had a few issues.
So onto the food. We ordered: glass of Pessimist ($15) glass of Black Stallion ($20) 8 oz Filet ($52) with green peppercorn sauce ($6) and three scallops a la carte ($10/ea) 16 oz New York ($56) brussells sprouts ($16) truffle mashed potatoes ($16) Let's just say, the wine, sides, and scallops were the silver lining of the meal.
The Good: The Pessimist was perfectly sweet and not too dry, and the Black Stallion was a bit more tart but also not too dry. The mashed potatoes were creamy and had a lot of truffle flavor. The sprouts were a bit oily/greasy, but had a really nice lime flavor. The scallops were cooked PERFECTLY and had excellent flavor. We also got one extra, so that was nice.
The Bad: The filet was incredibly dry around the edges but decently well cooked in the middle. There really wasn't any flavor on the filet itself, so the sauce on the side was the only source of flavor.
The Ugly: The new york was an absolute disappointment. I generally like to let the meat speak for itself, so I ordered the new york without any sauces. The crust was decent and it had a little flavor but overall was severely lacking in the flavor department. To make things worse, the steak was filled with tendon, so much so that I didn't have a single bite without tendon.
Sadly, we didn't see our waitress until we were both nearly finished with our meals. When she finally showed up, I mentioned the issues we had with our meal, to which she simply replied "ok thanks I'll tell the chef". There was no effort to try to provide any solutions or make the situation better in any way.
For a restaurant charging these prices, I would've expected better service and most definitely better quality of food.
To top it off, the only parking is valet ($10) and turns out, if you use card, they charge you a $0.50 cherry on top. Almost laughable for a $250 meal.
For the same money, you'll have a much better experience at a Fleming's...
Read moreIt's about time that I share a review about how fantastic The Winery is! My husband and I have been patrons to The Winery since 2007 - with their first restaurant in The Tustin District. We absolutely LOVE the Newport Beach location - such a beautiful 2 level space with a gorgeous view of the water. You cannot go wrong! The food is unbelievable! Every single time! Unbelievable! Last night, there were so many excellent options on the menu, it was borderline overwhelming trying to make up our minds! For the starter we shared the lobster & crab ravioli and almond dusted calamari (my husband was really hungry!) The ravioli was fantastic - such fresh fish meat and the most fresh herbs - so much flavor! The calamari was also great - that sauce is the best, with the perfect amount of kick. For our main courses, I chose the Braised Shortribs. Amazing! Great sauce, with the meat on top of delicious risotto and paired with prosciutto wrapped asparagus. Does it get any better!?! This dish is a favorite and constant on the menu. My husband has had this dish before, but I haven't. It does not disappoint - it's awesome! My husband ordered the bone-in filet mignon, which was a special. It was so flavorful and cooked to perfection. For a side, he ordered the edamame risotto - which was a side to another special they were having last night. So accommodating and absolutely yummy! They had excellent fish specials - a halibut (YUM!) and lobster tail. Both were enticing, but we just got back from a beach vacation and had a lot of fish all of last week, so we decided to enjoy meat instead. For dessert, we had to get the vanilla beignets! My goodness, these beignets are better than what you can get in the French Quarter! Lighter than air, with the perfect light crisp! Dipped in the rich chocolate sauce - absolutely divine!!! Of course you have excellent wine to select from. We enjoyed a 2013 "Anonymous" Red Blend from 1849 Vineyards. It was the perfect pairing for our meal and to enjoy through the night! Last, but not least, the service! It's soooooo very wonderful at The Winery! Our server was Sky. Such a fresh breath of air. Very kind, positive and friendly. Well-knowledged in the menu and wines and took such great care of our table! My husband and I don't escape much from our little ones, and Sky made our dinner experience a really lovely one for a much-needed date night. We would love to sit in his section again - absolutely wonderful server! If you haven't been, or it's been a long time, you've got to go to...
